how do I access older articles? I found the index, but how to get to the article?

The index of articles is just that - an index. If you want to access any archived articles, follow these instructions:
New Online Feature for Members (6/28/08)
We now have an online searchable database of selected past American Woodturner Journal issues and articles, available to AAW members. The intent is to make available, free of charge, archived articles that might be of particular interest to new and novice turners. To access these files, log onto the members Only area and read the introduction note on the main Members Page.
