OK so I joined the AAW, I am also a member of a local woodturning club thats listed in the AAW list of clubs.

I know I'll get 4 mags a year, but what else does it get you?

There isnt much in the "Members Only Area" at all.

I had expected there to be free Video lessons, Written tutorials, things like that, for a paid members only area.😕

I knew there was a discount of some vids and other AAW logo stuff but there isnt alot going on there either.
A few outdated overpriced VHS tapes. and a couple of DVD's .

Am I missing an area of wonder to a new AAW member?

Not complaining, just new and curious if i'm actually missing some area for paid members is all.😱

Dear AP,

Welcome to the AAW

AAW members:
Recieve The AAW journal,
are Insured for AAW activities including those of AAW chapters
may hold an office in an AAW chapter
are eligible to apply for an education opportunity grant
may attend the AAW symposium
may Vote in the election of board members
may visit the members only area.

Additional content is coming to the Members only area. The fist is likely to be project articles for download. Currently it is limited to the online directory.

happy turning,
Al

Al,

You forgot he will now have the right to whine about not getting his AAW Journal as quickly as some of the others. 😉 😱 😀

Hey !!!! I share your thoughts, this is an extremely difficult website to navigate for a computer novice. Also i just had to register again to post this. That makes 3 times I have done so in about 15 minutes.

I would really appreciate some assistance with this. I am an avid turner and enjoy seeing others work and comments.

Clint,
It's been a bit flaky lately. Just log in once and read all the posts in any thread. Then click on "Main Forum". You may find yourself logged in. Worked for me a couple times.

Edit: BTW, welcome to the forum and keep trying. You will get the hang of it. If I did, anyone can.

Now that you are one of us, you will now find that your tools stay sharp longer, you can use a skew without getting catches, your turnings will receive rave reviews, you will be asked to demo at clubs everywhere ... OK, maybe I got carried away ... welcome aboard! The sharper tools part may happen later ... 😉

If I recall correctly you may also use the AAW logo on your business cards and elsewhere. Moderator pls. correct if inaccurate and I will try to have the tattoo removed.

This is strange indeed. Your post count indicates 3 posts, but "Find all posts by Clint5699" in your profile brings up only one post (this one). I checked my own, and it also came up short by 12 posts. On another forum which also uses VBulletin, I have an even more drastic shortage. It may be that some off-topic posts, e.g. in The Back Porch, don't get counted; that's the way it is in the other forum. Upgrades to VBulletin may be the culprit, but I think your situation needs attention by a moderator.

As far as difficulty to navigate, I think it is one of the easier ones, and maybe it is just a learning curve. At the same time, I do spend an inordinate amount of time on here and know it too well to objectively comment.

I am open to comments (perhaps a separate thread on navigation).

As far as the post counts being off, I have no idea, I don't see anything real obvious but I will look into it.

Depending on what the magazine is worth to you, the AAW doesn't necessarily give you much for your money in concrete benefits.
The AAW describes itself as an "International, non-profit society dedicated to the advancement of woodturning by providing education, information, and organization." True to their objectives, they are offering the benefit of this forum to everyone instead of only to the paying members.
They have on occasion had special offers extended by commercial agencies. For example, there was a $100 rebate for any AAW member who bought a Powermatic 3520 about 2 years ago. There was also a 20% off all turning tools from Hartville Tool offer in the magazine about a year ago. However, these are the exception rather than the rule.

AAW benifits.

I have been a member of the AAW for 3 months. I applied for and received an EOG grant(Educational Opportunity Grant.) I'm taking the money buying a lathe and taking it up to the High school, and teaching 3 art classes.

Free tools for me, but I'm also spreading the word of woodturning. Most of the kids nowadays, have no idea what a lathe is, much less what it does.

You can really confuse people by showing them a natural edged bowl.

Also the AAW is a great place to show off what you can do, and also to get ideas of what can be done.
