Of what value is the card for AAW membership?

During my 10+ years of AAW membership, I have NEVER been asked to present my AAW card at any AAW event nor did it ever do me any good at a retail establishment. Fact is, I stopped carrying one years ago.
The AAW is now sending out the latest Resource Guide and with it is a memebership card. I guess the "card" would come in handy as a book mark.
I understand that Anderson Ranch is now offering 25% off classes for AAW members, though I doubt they would ask to see the card.
Am I missing something here...does anyone have a better use?

There is a card? I joined about a month ago for a 2 year membership and have not recieved anything yet. I know i'm a member cause it says so when I log onto the site and my CC was billed. Do they send anything?? I joined mainly because of this forumand thought it was a bargain for all the usefull info I get here and didn't want to be a free loader but at least an email saying welcome would be nice.🙁

Thanks for joining up, Mark. There is a lot more to AAW membership that the forum. This page covers all the high points of membership.

2009 membership cards are being mailed with the new resource directory (phone book). BTW, the only time I've seen a membership card used is when one of the founders or near-founders wants to flash their low member number. Mine is 21,592 😱

Mark,
Be patient, your official AAW bookmark is on it's way. Up to this point, the AAW has mailed out an annual Resource Guide (link takes you to the 2008 version) around this time of year and your card will be with it. Watch what you toss in the trash (along with that clear plastic protective cover), as part of the full size address page (cover letter) includes your card.
Also, the next issue of the AAW Journal should be out next month. It's possible they owe you the Spring issue...give the AAW office a call and make them aware.

another use for it is if you in a group and doing a little pr work for the AAW you have all the information at hand. mailing for some of the one that do not use computers. I think it is a good thing don't seem to take up too much room.

directory

Got mine yesterday. Already threw plastic bag in trash, and I found one wrapper this am without anything in it but cucumber peelings!!. Glad I really don't need it, Gretch

I'm wondering if anyone else knows the secret handshake that goes with the AAW membership card? I might be persuaded to share . . . 🙄

Dave,
Your browser doesn't remember it for you?

Hi Burt,

Yes, I believe that it does do that, but I never think to click on the box to make it appear. I just reach for the card.

Besides, when I reach for my wallet to buy a round for my friends, they always ask what that beautiful laminated card is. Yes... I laminate mine. 🙂 I get to give them the low down on what it is we do. They are usually shocked and amazed that anyone would have me as a member.

See ya,

Dave

It helps bulk the area around the spare car key you carry in your wallet? Keeps company with your Lee Valley customer number card?

I was hoping for a secret membership hug. 🙂

The membership card alone is not enough for a hug John. You also need in proper order the secret handshake and super secret decoder ring. A sachet of camphor shavings is also helpful.😀

O.K., I'll bite...

I'm a card carrying member since I started turning wood.

Betty, what will it take to coerce the secret handshake out of you? Some really nice turning wood??? A visit to my shop??? You don't need to show me that secret handshake for that...you'd be welcome anytime, handshake or not....

John, I'd give you the AAW secret hug (if there isn't one, I'd make it up), for all the things that you have been willing to share on this and all the other forums that you visit.

If you ever make it up north to New Hampshire, I would be disappointed if you didn't drop in...and I would love to see that little dremel lathe with the hollowing rig!!😀

Okay, a few clues to get you started on the secret handshake. First you need to have turned for a few years to build up strength in your hands. Everyone knows that the handshake of a woodturner is STRONG. After that, think about "riding the bevel" . . . put the heels of your palms together, then engage the fingers . . .

Those new to turning will probably get a huge catch right about now . . . 😱 and their hand will jump back . . . then you'll know they're a newbie from the nail marks left in your palm . . .

(Give me a couple more days to make up the rest of the secret handshake.)

For you, John, always a hug. Woodturners are the best givers-of-hugs.

Donna, you never know. I may visit New Hampshire sometime. If so, I'll take you up on your offer, thanks!

Every other organization of which I am aware provides membership cards to its members. If the AAW didn't have membership cards, then I am almost certain that there would be those who would insist on having one. There is a very simple solution for those who do not feel the need to have a card -- the round file.

Donna One of these days I'm heading to the northeast. Never been there and I own Keith Thompkins a visit one of these days and I've been dying to visit Bill Grumbine. I might just start off in Pennsylvania and keep on driving North.

Betty I'll be in southern Indiana the first weekend of June but I don't think I will have enough time to head up to Indy. I'd love to see you and Jennifer. My family will be at Spring Mill State Park. The Hamer mill was started by my Great Great Grandfather so we have our reunions there.

Another notch in the member name game

The AAW membership card has provide this thread where we are all getting another post. It has given Betty her third post so she has only two more to become a member of this forum rather than a N oo B.

It is giving the rest of us at least one more step on the journey to the name we aspire to. I do not feel like a senior journeyman, but sage, professor emeritus and scholastic sledgehammer are all monikers of my dreams. 😎

Thanks you for pointing it out, I have fixed Betty's title to the proper one.

Yeah.... I also thought the 'Noo B' following Betty Scarpino's name was a bit of a non sequitur.....

I just tore my membership card out of the mailing page about 10 minutes ago.... ....it made me smile when I finally got it out in one piece. I remembered this thread, and was disappointed that John Lucas wasn't there for my official hug! Maybe next year?

My (50th) birthday present to myself today, was to carve out a healthy block of time to ready a bunch of blanks for several day-long turning sessions this week, now that the semester is over and my grades have been submitted. I've been waiting since February to be able to get back to some serious turning to replenish gallery sales since January. On this past Monday, I picked-up a new Jet 1220 lathe (my lathe #3), and will also work on getting that set up this week too. Glad to get the AAW Directory in yesterday's mail as a signal that I'm back in the turning business!

Have a great week!

N ooooo B

I actually found it rather nice to be labeled newbie, so I don't mind earning my stripes and working through the ranks. In the spirit of fairness, I'd like to have my proper title back! 😀

I've not addressed the topic of this thread, the membership card. In my opinion, I don't really need one, however, the first few years of membership, I was glad to have that connection (late 1980s, early 1990s). Now my connection to AAW comes in many other forms, such as AAW's web site. I can look myself up any time I want (do I really exist?! . . . yes! there I am, what I relief!). It helps that my membership number is easy to remember, but even if it wasn't, it's easy to call or write to the home office to get it.

Only one more post to go . . .

I've been gone for a couple days, so I have missed out on the title fiasco/confusion/brouhaha. 😀

What is the Proper title and what was the improper title (just so that I don't get into trouble)?

Your wish is my command.

Wow! How about me? Since you are being generous, I have a list of things that I would like you to do for me. 😛

Rob The semester is over for me as well. I photographed 938 graduates shaking hands. Do I really do this for a living? Unfortunately for the summer all the student helpers are gone so all the little jobs fall on my hands as well as the usual stuff so it actually gets busier for me even though I don't have as many photo shoots.

Having a Happy H1N1 Commencement....???

Hi John!

Friday night I handled about 87 Ph.D. hoods, and took-in over 180 name cards for Masters Degree Graduates - every one of them personally handled by each graduating student.... as Commencement Marshals we were instructed to use lots of hand sanitizer! I had breakfast with the President of our University this morning at his home, and he told me that he shook the hands of over 1,000 graduates on Saturday - he also had the hand sanitizer going big time! Wonderful time of the year!

Back to turning, where my biggest concern is not about contracting an influenza virus, but simply getting a bad catch or ruining a spectacularly-figured piece of wood...things I CAN control! Certainly it's "my happy place", and I assume that of many others as well!

Cheers,

Rob

If you are an AAW board/staff member, or a forum administrator or moderator, you get an assigned title, all others get what the board is setup for

Rob, John. At Mich st university, the President recommended that no hand shaking occur. I did not attend our college's (vet med) private ceremony, but a friend said it was very funny with people's spontaneous reactions, trying not to shake hands. I think alot hugged!!!!!😱😀😀😀 Got around the prez's edict, Gretch

I think the press, and Joe Biden blew this all out of proportion. We have so many diseases going around the school at any given time it's a miracle we all aren't sick all the time. I look at it as simply building my immune system. I was in the bathroom the other day and a guy pulled all this tissue out so he could turn on the faucet and open doors without touching anything.
I grew up using my mouth as a third hand to hold pencils, nails, whatever so I guess I never got into the germ phobia thing. I can still hear my mother say "don't put that in your mouth, you don't know where it's been". Of course I'm 60 now and hardly ever been sick a day in my life.

John, I agree 100%. The last time I had flu, our children were in elementary school (I am almost 63). I wouldn't even consider sanitizing my hands after being in a grocery store or not shake someone's hand as some people do. It has been discovered that children raised in a almost germ free home do not have good immune systems. Our children were not cursed with a "germ free" home. LOL
