When did this happen?

"S1000s are no longer available in the US or Canada. The weak dollar and the continued increase in the cost of materials, manufacturing, and shipping have priced the machine out of the market."

Allot of overseas companies stopped shipping their products to the US this year.

750's are shipping about as fast and they can make them, although the bases are made here by Bill Rubenstein.

The 1000's, while using the same headstock and bed as the 750, have to be fabricated Down Under so the entire lathe must be shipped; both add substantially to the cost. Demand is down, in part, because of the long lead time (mine took 6 months), so it doesn't pay Omega or Bill to inventory or import them.

As far as I know, Omega will still take special orders for 1000's, but they must be brought in by the purchaser and will not be service-supported by the North American importers. Not that Stubbies need much in the way of support.

model

which model of stubbies were @ richmond, seemed like most rotations i went to had a stubby??????

750's were in Richmond, although I seem to remember that Bill had a 600 fixed-bed (24" swing) unit in the vendor area as well.

There's no advantage to having a 1000. All it will do that the 750 won't is swing 44" vs. 30". The price difference just became too great, for no real advantage (for most people) The stand on the 750 is adjustable for height, and easier to level. I use the 750, and it's what I always recommend.

Mark is just, well, different. 😀

Yeah, I have the S1000 but don't ever expect to use the full swing.

Would need to devise a way of getting a lump mounted that big ... the roof rafter wouldn't handle the weight of a block and tackle etc.

And how often do you get interesting timber that size?

And if you did, who has got the space in their home or office to display it?
