seems to me if you never have a catch....should be no problem, but as worrisome about blanks blowing up, seems that this would increase the odds of you having a blowup

well presented and very interesting approach, it takes out a lot of the druggery of hollowing and roughing out the outside.......not sure what works for Sam is what I am ready for ......

I clicked on your link and it did not take me anywhere.....I copied it and tried to use search and it ask me to download something from u tube.......I do not have much ram now without adding anything.....not sure about your long version
 
Not sure what happened, but it is now fixed. Copy and paste in the address bar of your browser should have worked -- is that where you pasted it? I checked it and it worked for me. I initially found the short version and that led me to the longer version.

Not sure what got fixed, but Bill's link to the long version (in post #2) has a link at upper left of the screen (at about 0:10) to the short version.

And the short version has a similar on-screen link to the long version.

In any event, the bandsaw works only for the central layer (with the hole). Need the jig saw for the adjacent layers.
 
Well that was interesting. I don't see why you would want to do it unless you simply can't or don't want to hollow something with lathe tools. Doing it in two half bowls is much easier and faster. If you insist on using a wood like poplar that you will be painting afterwords you would still have the first glue up but you wouldn't have the second glue up.
 
Interesting. He did get to perfectly round in a week.

I don't under stand the double turning. If he glued up the first blank hollowed he could just turn it and be done.
Maybe he had to to turn one this way to have a pattern to cut the pieces for a one time glue up.
Then just turn till round and it would be done.

Hollowing through the bottom would be a quicker process for me.
It is a lot easier to conceal a bottom plug when painted.
