For the first 20 months that I have been turning I was working in the basement. I have now converted a 24' x 24' pole barn/garage into my new shop. This entailed digging out 6" of the dirt floor adding 2" of foam insulation and 4" of concrete. The building never had garage doors so I walled the opening off and added a 6' swinging patio door unit for access. I put 3" of foam insulation in the walls and ceiling and put plywood over that. New insulated windows all around. I use a wood stove for heat. Only 50 amps 220v going to the breaker box, but I think that will be enough for my usage.
Equiptment includes: 2 lathes- Jet 1642 2hp, old delta/rockwell that I converted to variable speed using a treadmill motor, table saw, 2 drill presses, 2 band saws- 14" and 16", 6" jointer, 2 thickness planers- 8" and 12", 12" thickness sander, 6" belt sander/9" disk sander, 2hp dust collector, 2 ceiling mounted ambiant dust filters, 8" grinder- cbn wheel/ao wheel, a shopsmith that gets occasional use for horizontal boring and the bandsaw attachment, a few other minor pieces.
I am much happier with my new space and so is the wife, she has taken over the basement now with her crafts.
Unfortunately, to pour the floor I had to remove the stairs to the second floor. Later when the floor was finished I used a ladder to get something from the second floor and coming back down the ladder slid back and I fell 8' and landed on top of the ladder on my back. I broke some ribs and am still not fully recovered but am able to function fairly well.
Here is another new piece from the shop: Box elder dyed blue with transtint, about 6"h x 4"w, 1/8" walls. Happy for any comments, criticisms or questions.
