Well it's running. Bought this Union Graduate about 4 months ago. Cleaned and repainted put 2hp,3ph,1725rpm motor and VFD in it. A friend built the control box has fwd-stop-rev switch,VS control, emergency stop switch and jog fwd and jog rev, 4 rare earth mags hold it on the lathe. The blue tarp when open keeps the shavings from flying all over the tool bench, man did I have a mess before.

That looks really great, Harry........nice job of it, the UG looks like new! 😀

I do have one question: It looks like your tool rest is on the right side. Did you set this UG up to rotate clockwise.....for a lefty?

ooc

nice job, Harry

how large a bowl can you turn???????

Yes it does turn clockwise cause this is the bowl part you can get a bed for the other side.I have a rev so I can turn ether way.
The motor helps balance it,it's mounted in the base.
It turns 20" over this small bowl bed.
The emergency stop is going to be replaced, there's also one on the wall next to the VFD.
I have this set-up to see how it's going to do. It will be fully set-up in another place in the shop I'm in the process of having my nephew build a tail stock and tool rest for the regular bed for the other side.
I'll keep updates coming as I progress.

Beautiful work, Harry. I've been thinking lately that I would like to try turning on the "back" side of my lathe. Don't ask why ... it's just one of those thoughts that I get when I start thinking that I would like to use both sides of my bowl gouge before going back to the grinder or honing. The only thing that has stopped me is that I was concerned about getting pǝʇuǝᴉɹosᴉp --err, I mean, disoriented from turning on the other side of the lathe so I am wondering if there was much of a transition involved? I am guessing that it may be more of a mental roadblock than anything else for me since it used to be very common to have an outboard spindle on lathes for turning things that are too large to be done over the bed.

J Paul hollows from the other side, he does not hollow from both sides, and that seems to be your question, or your option. He says it is less stress on shoulder and elbow joints.

I would like to use both sides of my bowl gouge before going back to the grinder or honing..

I use both sides of the gouge a lot when hollowing bowls. Left side for the finish cut on the wall right side for hogging out ahead of the finished cut.
The beauty is the left side stays sharp longer. it's the Ellsworth and O'neill influence....

There you go again Bill thinking to much didn't anyone ever caution you about that. You'll end up with an upside down inside out backwards vortex. But then again your mixed up already please don't make it worse or we'll have to place you in the upside down inside out backwards vortex room where the only thing you can do is watch other people turn exotic wood on American Beauty lathes.

OK, I've done some thinking, but I didn't inhale while I was thinking. 😀
