New Jet 1221 rev,var

$800, available the end of March, according to an email I got from a local dealer yesterday. It includes these features:
Variable Speed Range: 60 to 3600 RPM
Digital RPM Readout
Forward and Reverse Operation
Spindle Designed with Industrial-Style Preloaded Bearing
24 Integrated Indexing Positions
Acme Thread on Tailstock Quill
1 HP Motor

Nice lathe but the swing is still lacking... The swing is a 12" swing right with a
21" center to center i'm taking it....by the title.

Now if it was a 14" swing and 1.5 hp I would take a much closer look. 😀

Is that a set of brushes I see on the motor near the end of the clip?

Doesn't seem to be any major improvement other than moving the controls to the right hand. Did they imply any others to you?

The mini lathes are getting bigger.
Don't know if 14" is in the future.

One trend is these 12 " machines can make a nice set up for club classes and workshops.

The 10" machines lack the size and power.
The 12" machine would do nicely for a bowl class where 10" bowls are nice teaching size
Don't take too long to finish and there is enough wood to practice the cuts on.

Probably a good demo lathe for a club on a budget or where it has to be carried to the meeting.

I think the new 12" mini's make good starter lathes. They have enough power to turn bowls. It's hard for new turners to find stock that will make a bowl over 12" anyway. With a bed extension they are as big as many of the lathes we all started with. Although most of us had 3/4 horse.
The new breed of 12" mini's have better bearings and better machining than many of the old "full size" lathes that we started on. I'm talking about the old Amateur versions of the Delta, Jet and off name brands.
I remember my Delta was $500. My current Delta mini was $600 and has a bigger motor and variable speed. Another $100 or so and I could have the bed extension. It is a much better running lathe than that old Delta that I had.

I would have to agree with you there 12" is perfect for teaching learning on a 10" sized bowls ... And yes this lathe is much nicer than my mini {Rikon 70-100} with its new futures it has but it is still a mini.... If i'm dumping close to a $800.00 should just save a little bit more for that bigger lathe an buy a heavy duty lathe with a 16" swing and 1.5 hp at least is what i was thinking. Not saying this lathe isn't nice.... It looks sweet.....too but.... than again....mini is all i'm saying.

I tend to agree with you, until I remember how much lathe prices have gone up in the past 5 years.

A new top end ONEWAY or Robust will run $6-8,000.
A new powermatic is over $4,000. I'm stuck in the mindset that the powermatic costs $2200........,

Lathes are more expensive, $800 Is probably a competitive price point for the msrp.

I've seen a few used jet 1642 s recently in the $12-1400 range. I wish you luck getting a lathe.
