Much has been said even on these threads about Grizzly products. But I have met someone who owns one their big band saws, using it in a mill daily. He loves it. Now, I am finding that my 12" Delta just doesn't "cut" it for me any more and I need a larger saw. Looking at the Grizzly, G0513X 17" 2 HP, it looks pretty good. Any comments or experience with this saw?

I have the G0514 19" and have been very pleased with it. Plenty of power for resawing and whips thru big bowl blanks with no strain. Money well spent.

Knowing someone that uses a tool everyday and has no complaints is a pretty good recomendation. Only someone that has used one for years and still has no complaints would be better.

I've had the G0513 for about a year. Just before they came out with the x. It cuts all that I have asked it too. If I was going to do a lot of fine cutting I would do some upgrading I think, on the guides.

Just remember that ya gets what ya pays for. If you want a large saw for roughing and cutting blanks, the Grizzly is a fine saw. 2hp should be enough power and 17" should give you a decent throat.

If you want to also do finer cutting on the saw, think about the Rikon. Grizzly is dependable and works well for what it is but isn't the greatest finish saw.

The other thing to know is that the higher priced, higher end Grizzly stuff should match the price in quality.

I'd like to recommend one of the new Steel City tools bandsaws. We just went to thier headquarters and checked them out. These are excellent saws lots of good features. Top and bottom wheels are adjustable to keep them coplaner. The upper bearing guide bar is also adjustable to make it run true. The castings are very clean, the bearing guides are very easy to adjust and it has the best dust collection I've ever seen. The dust collection port is under the lower guide bearing. To show how well it works he poured some sawdust into the bottom of the bandsaw about 2' from the dust port. He shut the door then opened it back up and all the sawdust was gone.
Unfortunately we weren't able to run the saw but based on the quality of all the other parts and the rest of the tools in showroom I think this will be a great saw.

I have the G0513X and it has worked great for me. I haven't maxed it out yet (at 12" thick wood) but it has handled 10 and 11" thick blanks quite well.
I've not done any fine cutting on it as I still have my 12" bandsaw available.
For the money I would heartily recommend it as an upgrade from a 12" saw.

How do the corresponding Jet saws compare? I'm a school teacher on a very limited budget & I'm already looking to spend big (for me) on the jet 1642 after Christmas. Right now I'm roughing blanks w/ the chainsaw. Have been looking at one of the 14" Jets bandsaws. Any thoughts?

thanks,

Jet Bandsaw

I have the 18" Jet bandsaw purchased when they were using a 1.5 hp motor. I do not care for it and will replace it as soon as it comes towards the top of the priorty list. The bearing guides are poor, not enough power for what I want to do and the table lock is not robust enough when cutting heavy blanks. I settled when I bought it so I could purchase a planer at the same time. If I did it over I would buy a better quality saw which would also have a foot brake on it.

2hp seems about right for that saw. 17" wheels get you the increased table size, but still limited to 12" resaw. While woodturners don't usually resaw, any extra height here allows for processing of larger logs.

As far as sawdust, wet logs like to produce a fine spaghetti and a little sawdust. Especially when cut end grain parallel to the blade.
