Greetings all

I have been meaning to do this for some time now, but just haven't gotten around to it. The is our evil cat Amber. We took her in as a kitten, and she is one of those who will let you pet her until she is tired of it, and then she bites you. We love her anyway, and after several years has finally gotten the idea that she is supposed to be catching mice. Since there seem to be a lot of cat lovers here, I thought I would post ours.

From Mr. Squeak:
STT (Single Tuxedo Tomcat) desires to meet YTF (Yellow Tabby Female). Have had paradigms shifted.

Mr. Squeak my find his hands...uhhh, I mean his paws full with this one! She is fiesty enough that she will jump on Bubba, our 95 lb golden/lab mix. And poor Rowdy the Shi-Tzu/poodle mix is outweighed by two pounds!

Here's one of my two:

This is Leaf. He is the younger of the two cats, and led an interesting life. He was rescued from a tree at the age of 4 weeks by my wife, where he was dangling by his front claws from a branch about 7' off the ground, screaming for help. He was then taken in by my wife's friend, on whose property he was found. Later, on of my wife's friend's employees decided that this cat was not being well taken care of, and turned him in to the pound---without, of course, telling my wife's friend. Some days later, my wife saw him in Petsmart. Not that we needed another cat, but I said we should take him home, because my wife has an emotional investment in him and it would shatter her to think that he was euthanized.

The difference in the older cat is amazing now. 🙂

Hello from me and Tiger. He's one of four in our household. I don't allow them near the lathe, though. 🙂

What's the deal with turners and cats, anyway.

Regards to all pets and the humans they own.

Danny

Cats are the most popular "pet" in the U.S., numbering about 75 million. So ya gotta figure a lot of them would have turners for their pets.

Cats

I thought I'd join the CatFest just to show that the English love Cats too!

The Mother is Pebbles who is a real pain, but lovable Cat...she's recently learnt to climb on top of the refrigerator, open the door, climb down and snatch a treat on the way!...we've lost a lot of food to her this last week...I must fit a child lock today...

The two Ginger Toms went to a lovley home but we kept the two tabby Queens, now called Holly and Willow. They only have interest in our daughter though and ignore us consistently.

We also have an eighteen year old cat who is now blind.

And then there's the dog and the chickens...

At least I have a use for sawdust and shavings!

Christine says "Hi to Leaf and Tiger. Welcome to the forum."

Chris, Sorry about your Tiger. Maybe could keep using your Tiger's picture for a while. Sort of a memorial. Just a thought.

Request for Subforum

Is it time for a poll on whether to create a cat subforum?

To keep things relavent, does anyone know how to turn a cat (without getting hurt)?

How to turn a cat:

1) Acquire a small kitten.

2) Spend lots of time and attention on the small kitten, playing with it as if it were a dog. Cease playing with it when it bites or claws, or when it runs away.

3) When the kitten, by now a cat, has become accustomed to this style of play, and actively seeks it out, bring it into a room of the house with a hardwood, vinyl, or other smooth-surfaced floor.

4) Begin by roughing the cat on its belly. Once it is on its back, use pressure on one of the two upper shoulders, and induce a spinning motion. The cat will only appreciate this for two to three revolutions, so you don't have much time.

My older cat likes to be turned counter-clockwise. 🙂

I have also used that method to turn a cat.

Another way is to get a feather a string on a small rod. Wave the feather around the cat in a circular motion. Warning - do not place hands near the feather if you don't like cat scratches. 🙂

Cat house

Wow, there are even more cats here than I thought! It begs a question, but I can't ask it. 😀

Bill-to which house are you referring??
How do you fellows get such nice pics of cats without the red eye??? My red eye reduction (flashing several times before the pics so that with people the pupil closes down) doesn't work on cats.
My Siamese cat is not allowed outdoors. Can get pics inside if profile. Must join the ranks of the cat turners and get my cats in the avatar. BTW my cats join me in turning. The young one pounces atop my bag of shavings (held in a bracket) and watches, and was he surprized when he jumped into the empty container 😀 Gretch

I know there would be no turning going on with Amber. There would be too much tearout, and that on the turner! 😱

I remember reading somewhere that clipping a cat's nails is like trying to sharpen a lawn mower blade while it is running. I think turning the cat might be the same.

There are only two ways to remove red-eye, and only one sure-fire way to do it at the time of image capture. Red-eye happens when the light from the flash goes into the eye of the subject and illuminates the retina and/or vitreous humor, thus resulting in the "evil glow". To avoid this at the time of image capture, one must use an indirect flash---bounce off the ceiling, white card on an external flash, or multi-flash setup with umbrellas or soft boxes.

Don't have that? The easiest way to fix it after the image is taken is to take the image into your favorite image editor and manually remove red-eye. This can be a painstaking process, but many packages out there have automatic red-eye removal scripts. I use The GIMP, and have not yet found an automated red-eye removal tool, so I have to go in and clean it up manually. Usually takes me about 3--5 minutes per eye.

Wow, has this thread ever wandered!

Leaf looks like he might be a Turkish Van. Does he have the charateristic Van tail? Check out our late T. Van, Scooter, at her web site Scooter's Place

Minimum flash with maximum aperture is one way, but some cameras only give one level of flash. Photo editing can also be used. I prefer indirect lighting with no on-camera flash. Ambient lighting is good if the cat will stay still long enough. For some reason, Mr. Squeak's eyes do not seem to have the problem with red (or green) eye that many cats often have.

Has the thread wandered?

He may very well have some Turkish Van in him, however I see more Siamese in his conformation. His tail is narrow and lithe, and seems to be as long if not longer than his body. He is very leggy. His coloration is not only on his head, but stripes down his back through until the last 1/4 of his tail, at which point the white takes over. His color shows ginger tabby striping. As for his breeding: He was born feral.

He's a great cat, though---he's adopted the dogs (both of them), and will often select one to follow/herd around. Some developmental issues have left him without an upper-left canine (or should we call the tooth a feline in this case?) and a fairly constant case of watery left eye. Otherwise, he seems happy and healthy.
