Needing some help Jet 1442

First off I'm a long time lurker, first time poster.

I purchased a Jet 1442 about 3 years ago, right before they went to the 5 yr waranty. So far jet has been very good on sending me free parts.

About two months ago, my center bearing was making a terrible noise. During the tear down, I notice the hub on the side of the bearing that goes into the pulley's raceway was worn bad. I called jet to talk with the tech as to what might have caused the wear to the extent it was, he thought the bearing had locked up. Under good faith he sent me out a new Reeves pulley for the spindle and a bearing. Upon installing the pulley and bearing, I imediately noticed two things. 1. It was a real bear getting the bearing to seat on the pulley. 2. Once I took it above 1500 rpm, there is was a horrible clicking noise, to the point that it hurt the ears at 3000 rpm.

I called Jet back and held the phone to where he could here the noise. LOL he says that's not right. Desides to send my a second pulley and a new bearing. I got them in, tore everything apart, and installed the new. Same problem. I also noticed at this time that the other side of the pulley where the locking tabs are, now extend out 16th of an inch longer than my original. Doesn't seem like much, but when you look at where the belt rides in the pulley you would see that it is not going in as far on the spindle side, or riding as high on the motor side. I should mention here that the belt is litterally slapping around the spindle pulley when 1500 rpm or higher.

Another phone call, another listening in, another pulley, bearing, and now a center bracket sent to me. As mentioned above, very generous in the parts supplied to me. I get these in and first thing I check them over. Right of the bat I notice something. My original center bracket was tapered at the edge where the bearing enters, the new one is not. Tabs are still of the longer length, and everything seems to go together way to tight. Being I now had 3 pulleys laying around, I desided to mill the tabs back to the original length. This takes care of the pulley not opening all the way. I couldn't even get the bearing started at first into the new bracket. Carefully I tapped it in, but found that it was not hitting it's spot in the bottom. I remembered I had a bearing that was just a tad smaller that I had ordered awhile back locally, it would slip in my old bracket so I never used it. I put this one on and was able to get it set in the bracket with greater ease. Put everything back together and the noise is still there. When you turn the handwheel by hand, and have a finger on the side of the bearing bracket, you can feel something popping inside as it spins. The vibration is being transfered down the spindle and into the wood.

So another call back to Jet, and this time he tells me he's stumped. He suggested I bring it to a authorized repair center. I'm trying to decide if this will help or not, being I know of two others having the exact same problem with their 1442's after having replaced the spindle pulley. Gut feeling is it's all about the new parts not being made to the correct specs. Jet still has their great customer service going on, but parts are failing in a way I never have experienced before.

The help I seek is has anyone else with a 1442 recently replaced their spindle pulley, only to get this noise and vibration? And have you found a fix?

Sounds like a lot of different things going on at one time, Something that you didn't say anything about was the motor did you run it with out being hooked to the belt. Also if that bearing slipped into the housing with out any force it might be loose in the housing causing the noise. When you drive on the bearings on a shaft drive on the inter race and when driving into a housing drive on the out side race. If your shaft (spindle) is rough could be the problem. if the housing where the bearing sets is rough might also be a problem. The Aluminum pulleys can ware where the ride on the shaft and that causes noise. if the belt is too tight can cause noise. another thing if I remember right the motor pulley is spring loaded. if it gets gummed up to where it will not slide can cause problems. If you have tried all of these you might think about taking it to a service center.

Dave If the bearings aren't parallel to each other you can get a clicking and a small jump of the spindle. I had this happen on my old Delta. I carefully reseated the bearings so they were pressed against the lathe headstock body and the clicking went away as well as the runout of the spindle. Don't know if that's your problem or not but it sounds similar.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

I do get the same noise when the belt is not hooked to the motor, and I rotate the hand wheel. As far as the housing itself, it was not really smooth to start with. I guess the best way to put it is it has a matte like finish, just like the outside surface. I realized this wasn't right, and I carefully took some 220 grit paper to it to smooth it down. The bearing going into the housing is a snug fit, perhaps a bit to snug. the bearing supplied by Jet did not want to seat all the way in, and it took a bit of force just to get in as far as I did. It is a pretty tight fit on the pulley hub as well. I get this noise now with either the old or the new center bracket as well. As far as the motor pulley, I have taken it off and cleaned it and the shaft just to be sure it moves smoothly. I'm thinking of getting a new spring for back there just for the fun of it.

John I've taken this lathe apart probably close to a dozen times in the past few weeks. I can see where your coming from, and I'll do a double check on mine. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and find I got some dirt hanging around in one of the housings.

i have the same problem as dave
mine has been rebuilt 3 times and now is at a repair ststion
talked with them today and the only thing that they did not order to fix mine is the cast iron frame of the head stock
they ordered all bearings, pullys, main shaft, and motor plus all springs
hope that they get it fixed
