Can anyone offer help on my woodfast tailstock - the "keeper" a piece of metal which makes sure the tailstock screw stays in is coming loose - it looks like there should be an allen screw accessed from the wheel to keep it in place but I want to verify this before I try to find an allen screw and would anyone know the size - thanks if possible

Just to keep things simple there are at least two methods of holding that keeper in place.

one is a screw on the top of the tailstock with a wide head tha clamps the top of the keeper like the lathe we own.

Another method used on the Maryland Hall woodfasts is a set screw that is accessed through a hole in the hand wheel. So you have to kind of know where it is in order to line up the hole. As I recall this was a 4mm and I used the allen wrench for the oneway chuck. I could be wrong on this ( i do know the belt pulley on those lathes had a 4mm set screw)

If you have a hole in the handwheel you may be able to feel around with a 3mm allen wrench and find the screw. I think the set screw is straight up but it might be a little to the left as you look at the handwheel. Maybe you can see in with a light but it will be hard to get your eyes and the light in front of the hole at the same time.

Good news is this is a simple fix if you still have the set screw.

Happy Turning,
Al

Tail stock kiedeper pin

Nick: I have a Woodstock lathe and love it. I hae the spare parts book and the "keeper" is called "sellock pin" and measures 1/8 x 1 inch. It keeps the cam bolt from coming loose. I can fax the schematic to you if it would help, and you have a fax number. I can be reached at 417-223-4435 and I live in Pineville, MO. hope this helps. I have a M-Series 2 (model M408 lathe).
