I mentioned at our club meeting that I needed some maple for a one on one class I'm teaching on bowl turning. I didn't say how much but in my mind I'm thinking a small 12" log about 4 feet long is all I really need. Here is what arrived at my house. The largest log is 36" in diameter. I only have 17" cutting capacity on my chainsaw so I'm headed to the saw shop at lunch today to get a longer bar.
If your within driving distance of Cookeville, TN and need some large or small maple blanks just drop me a line and I'll make plans to help you out. I will never use this much wood and will probably have to call the guy and have him pick it up and haul it off. It would take me an entire weekend just to cut it up small enough to haul to the dump and would take about 3 or trips at almost 25 miles round trip.

What a Haul!

John, this reminds me of a statement I viewed on this or another forum a day or so ago. "Careful what you ask for - You might just get it". lol 😱 Sure wish I lived closer to you. Just purchased a new chain saw with 24" bar and it needs to be broken in. 🙂

John,

It will keep, right where it is. Just keep the end painted with sealer. Cut off what you need for an afternoon of roughing and repaint the log end. Roll it over once in a while and it will keep for a year or two.

Realize your relationships with others in your household might not have the same shelf life as that log laying on the lawn. So sharpen your chain and get to work.

Roll the logs? These things are 28 to 36" in diameter and 8 feet long. I hate to think how much these things weight. I need to get the big one off the "little ones". I'm thinking about wrapping a chain around it anchored to the bottom logs and rolling it off with my truck.

Go down to the Post Office and ask them if they have a 3 ft. X 3 Ft. X 8 ft. Flat Rate box, If so, I'll take it.

Bill I can't wait till Tuesday. I'm going to haul a big chunk to the post office downstairs with a label stuck on it and see what my postmaster has to say. Should be funny.

You can borrow one of my cant hooks. Or better yet, my skid-steer.

Chuck I think to start with I'm going to jack it up from both sides with hydraulic scissor jacks. That should allow me to finish cutting the end off. That will reduce the weight quite a bit. Rolling it off with the truck will be pretty easy. I have large cables, straps and chains. I'll just put a lag screw into the log below to hook the chain onto.
learning to handle logs this size is a necessary evil. I keep hoping I'll find a cant hook at the flea mkt but haven't yet. I may have to break down and buy one from a dealer.
