Does anyone have the early issues of Fine Woodworking that had feature stories about David Ellsworth, Al Stirt, Dave Lancaster and others. I'm thinking it was late 1970's or real early in the 80's. I don't need the magazines themselves, I just need to know the month and year of the publication and who was in which issue. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Google ["fine woodworking" ellsworth OR stirt OR lancaster] just got 6,990 hits. Many of the [lancaster] hits are for Lancaster PA, though.

The book "Lathes and Turning Techniques" has citations for Ellsworth from July 1985, January 1986, and November 1987. One of those also mentions Stirt; nothing indexed for Lancaster.

You need to find someone who has the Fine Woodworking DVD - it has all the issues in it I beleive and is searchable

A search on the word turning on thier website found hundreds of examples with issue, title, author and page number. Not the article but it is the info you are looking for. Lots of names you haven't mentioned. Nish, Stockdale, Raffan, etc ... You will find the ones they wrote - none show up as stories of them just articles by them... hope this helps

For example:

Fine Woodworking - May/June 1979 - #16 HOLLOW TURNINGS by John David Ellsworth

Dick,

I'm not organized enough to help, but as was pointed out, there is an index on DVD, and it was in the mag on a regular basis as well. The early articles were on David, Al, Bill Hunter, and there was a seminal article on "spalted" wood and the work of Mark/Mel Lindquist. Also Stephen Hogbin. You won't find Dave Lancaster as he came along in the late 80's, and I don't recall anything on him. If you look in 1990? you'll find one of mine. 🙂

Check FWW website, maybe the index is there.

Fine Woodworking Magazine

I have all issues from the first in I think 1978, or it says Vol. 1. up to 2006.
I am however missing 2 years within that time frame.
I purchased an entire workshop of a deceased woodworker and the books were part of it.
How can I help.

Go to your local library and find out if they subscribe to Ebsco. If they do you can search for articles in magazines and print out the articles.

The March/April 1987, No 63 issue of Fine Woodworking has a nice article about Rude Osolnik. It also has an article written by him titled "Spindle Turning, Fine points for the beginner." Hope this is helpful.
