Just got started turning.
Got an old Sears craftsman lathe from my papaw.
It was made by American machine, who no longer makes
lathes or parts. I'm looking for a faceplate for turning bowls.
My lathe has a 3/4" thread head spindle. All the face plates
at the local Woodcraft stores are 1" thread. Any suggestions
on where else to look? : 😕

You can look at several stores.

Woodcraft
Craftsupplies USA
Penn State Industries
Lee Valley
Rocklers
Woodworkers Supply
Harbor Freight

You may even be able to get the part from Sears.

Failing that you might be able to find an adapter from one of these stores.

A machine shop may be able to make a face plate for you also.

this is normal and all the stores listed above if they don't have it can order it. if you get online to woodcraft they will send you one from the warehouse if the store does not have one. this thread is standard for quite a few small lathe and you should have no problem getting one. no adaptor is necessary it is the same thread as the nut and bolt thread. with a nut you could make your own special faceplate if need be

the threads are actually 8 tpi. I think thats how you say it. But it has 8 threads. Woodcraft didnt make them any more, so if anyone has one please give me a price.

Tpi

Not tryin' to be a wise guy here 🙄 but just to be sure you're saying what you mean: TPI stands for Threads Per Inch. Hold a ruler against the threads and count the number of threads in an inch. If there are only 8 threads in an inch it is 8 TPI. '

source for odd faceplates

I went looking for that adapter and found a 3/4 X 16 X 2" faceplate with a shipping ticket. Don Pencil has a good collection of plates available at www.donpencil.com Give a woodturner a chance to fill your order.

Very unlikely to have 8 tpi on a 3/4" spindle, or anything that diameter.
Get a 3/8" machine bolt with standard course threads, it would be 16 tpi. If it meshes with the spindle, then bob's yer uncle. If not, get a selection of bolts with known threads until you match it up. I think 12 tpi is also used on small lathes, but much less common.

It's 3/4 - 16

According to all the Sears literature and the old Craftsman lathe sitting in a corner of my shop, the lathe has a 3/4 - 16 thread. Faceplates are still available from many sources as suggested by several of the first posts. I know that Craft Supplies USA carries that threading in several different faceplate styles and sizes.
