New turner here figured I'd post a couple pics of my recent efforts and get some feedback. Vase is elm / fire wood about 4 1/2" tall with matching saucer, next is a Birch shallow bowl 9" diameter 2 1/2" high.
Thanks for the input

Like 'em. You've got some courage cutting that vase the pretty way versus the easy way. I am always somewhat disappointed when I turn a nice ring-porous wood like elm or ash with grain running along its length. Never appears as dramatic as flat face grain. Catchy business working with it in the cross-grain direction on smaller pieces as you have.

Looks as if you had a lid planned for the vase, did you?

They look good to me. It looks like you have accomplished some nice first turnings. In general you want to maintain some continuous curves on most pieces, and these 3 have that features. I like the vase the best.

Thanks MM and Jeff
I am trying hard to catch on to this turnning thing no pun intended LOl
Actually the vase wasn't intended to have a lid or a saucer but the waste piece was calling to be turnned into something so I came up with the saucer. It sounds like a fun project tho for some of my upcoming blanks as I got a few large pieces of a fresh cut maple and got alot of roughing out to do.
Speaking of the courage I still have alot to learn as I'm partially self taught ( me and the net) no money left for lessons so I relly on these forums and alot of reading and some commonsense as in if that little voice in my head goes off I listen. Not sure if thats enough but its getting me by. Lots of good info gleaned from all the people posting. So thanks for the lessons.
Thanks
Tim

Tim,

Try looking for the location of your nearest AAW chapter. There you will find lots of friendly and helpful folks most likely willing to show you their methods and techniques just because they like to be nice to new members. You will find the link to the list of chapters on the AAW home page.

I know that I wished I had done this when I started.

Tim, Very smart, listening to that little voice. Mine frequently screams "Stop, you are about to screw up!" Have found it best to heed such notifications. Has prevented many injuries to self and/or the work in progress.

Some very nice work! Press on.

Why is it that it's a female voice that nags?

why female?

Michael-I believe the "little voice" was his little nagging conscience, rather than the "other nag" that you might be familiar with.!!!! 😀 Gretch

Even our cardiac monitor nags in a female voice. Think some of the new ones allow a choice, but it makes sense to keep the default female. Since when did a woman ever listen to a man?

Little Voice

My "little voice" is the one inside my head. Sounds just like my regular voice, and comes from the 3 or 4 brain cells that are assigned to "good judgement", or "trying to avoid doing something dumb".

MM they're all are right!!! I never put a sex to the voice at all. No nagging was mentioned thats way different at least for me.This is comming from HWMBO's opinion only = MINE !!!
I just was saying sometimes your little voice tells you you should not do something a certain way and I/you should listen. It usually amounts to nothing more than finding a safer way or becomming a bit more familiar with a particular task.
When I was first learning woodworking I subscribed to both Fine woodworking and Woodsmith and read these along several other books over a year while I planned shoppe and tool purchases. Having never had any formal training It has served me well as I now do many things that I learned only by reading a blow by blow description in one of those or other publications. This was before I had any online knowledge or access?
I'm learning this craft pretty much the same way but there's so much available online I find myself doing my reading over the net. For example I never new of the risk with using a roughing gouge on non spindle work! But now that I know I head the advice of the majority. It just makes sense to me!
I would say it's very similar to when I only had a radial arm saw and would rip as well as crosscut with it. I never new of the danger of ripping with the radial arm but once I read it I still continued till One day when I launched a piece of solid cherry 8/4 x aprox 1" into and thru the cinder block wall in my shop.Scared the bleep ity bleep out of me. The procedure always made me a bit unnerved (aka little voice)
Now I read and apply what I learn or go search for more info when the LITTLE VOICE says no no no!!!
Most of the time it just slows the process until I feel more comfortable or apply any needed additional safety measures.
Makes me more comfortable thats for sure.
But then what do I know???

Answer ??

A little more each and every day!!
Thanks all for the input though I really do apreciate it
Tim 😉

Great tapdance, Tim.

When I'm teaching defibrillation I like to use that female voice joke to lighten things up. It has come in handy when I'm trying to get leads on and evaluate the level of consciousness on "man down" types, too. Almost any man, even with chest pain, understands why the female voice says "connect electrodes."

If he laughs, I don't get out the tubes.
