need advice on how to hang my first wall hanging

I have almost completed my first attempt at a wood turned wall hanging and was wondering what method is best to hang one. Type of hardware,(hanger,wire etc..) or method that has worked for you or someone you know personally to have used successfully. Mine is a relatively small one about 23" x 15" even though irregular in shape maybe 3 or 4 pounds haven't weighed it.

Two Ways - Depends

Not knowing what your piece looks like, I'll make alternate suggestions:

For a "bowled form" like this I used a single toothed bar picture hanger that is centered on the long axis. It was cut into what would be the contact ring of the bowl section. The piece is then hung on a single screw. If you have unequal left-to-right weight, you could do it this way if you are careful with the bar placement and then use two screws or pins in the wall to prevent rotation

Second option is to use a 2-point mount. This piece is hung using a pair of framer's loops (without the picture wire) that are spaced 16" apart to pick up screw heads or small hooks in neighboring wall studs.

A friend turns large platters he makes three carved feet two of which he drills holes for picture wire.
Platter can sit on a large surface or hang on the wall.

A keyhole router slot will work for your weight. Need solid wood and enough depth 🙂


A simple mount is to rip a length of 1x4 at a 45.

Screw one part to the wall screw the other part to the sculpture ( or attach with dowels and glue).
I would use a wood that is comparable to the wood in the sculpture do what you can to make it look like it belongs.
The 45 faces fit back together making a solid wall mount.
This is self leveling hanger so be sure to put it in the right place.

The term here is "French Cleat" or "basin mount" (available in steel at HD). Will work just fine but overkill for a 3-4 pound item. Biggest advantage is that the cleat will hold the piece in exactly the designed aspect with no wobble and no "leveling" needed. Drawback is the two components must be set at the correct horizontal axis.

I get mine from eBay as they are much cheaper.
Just drill a hole with a Fortner bit & fit over, can be nailed or screwed. I usually drill holes top & bottom which gives the owner a choice of which way to hang it.
The beauty of them is that with the saw teeth they can be adjusted to hang correctly.

i am guessing that you are talking about the plaque you posted in gallery. I would prefer the keyhole slot. It will be sturdy and not take a lot of work to get it there.
