Natural Edge Bowl

Just curious when doing a natural edge bowl. When you start out between centers what is the preferred way on the drive end. Remove the bark with a chisel, drill thru it with a Forstner bit, or pound the drive center into the bark.

The drive center must be in solid wood.
I select my center point and drill a 1/2 inch into the wood with a 1 1/4 Forstner.

Removing an area of bark with a chisel or a jointing pass with a chainsaw exposes solid wood the drive the spur into.

Never drive a spur into the bark. It will not hold reliably.

Sounds good I'll try the Forstner bit. Never made a natural edge bowl before. I have a piece of Walnut I'm going to try tomorrow.

Wow that is a great find. Thanks for the tip. Yes Riverside is only about an hour and fifteen from here. I can't make it this month but I will plan on making it next month. They have a bunch of newsletters on line I will look thru before then.
