Attached is a pic of a mistletoe-burl mesquite log - hopefully it attached.
I've never seen one as spherical as this one - thought some of you might find it interesting.
If anybody knows anybody that has a large outboard system for a Oneway-24 they would loan, rent or sell cheap, let me know.
Otherwise I plan to build one - I'll be stiff competition for the Darwin award.

Well you could send that tiny piece of mesquite over to me. 🙄 What is the diameter of that little piece?

I've seen a few big pieces of mesquite, but never any mistletoe burl like that. Hopefully it turns out to be a real prize.

A burl that size alone might be worth investing in the outboard rig......just so you'll have it from now on......

The diameter averages around 35" - best guess is it weights over 800-lbs - a bit heavy to pick up and stand on the bathroom scales.

I'll be documenting this one bigtime - it will either be interesting or one of those "did you see that idiot".

This will be about my 15th mistletoe burl mesquite - three talls and the rest about 20"-diameter. Until you get it on the lathe and start rounding, it's difficult to determine what you have. Because of the number of axis-changes on past pieces and especially what I foresee on this one, no choice but to start with a 1.5" jumbo drive and then go to a faceplate when the axis is settled.

Mistletoe-burl reveals itself slowly. I'll bring the profile to final shape and then start hollowing - what makes mistletoe-burl different is: you don't see the piece until the negative space is revealed. Of course that's when the filament tape, several layers thick, is required to keep it from exploding - that only happened once and it got my attention. The good news is it becomes self-bailing - no more stopping to remove shavings.

I'll be doing the outboard this weekend plus I also need to redo the crane system - pulling the ceiling down would be embarrasing.
