Well I finally got a chance to get some shop time and I made my fluting jig. I made it to fit my jet mini lathe and it will be mainly used for my pen blanks. It can be used for other things and also the table top can be replaced and made longer or adapted to other needs. I borrowed most of the ideas from John lucas for whom I thank. Maybe someone can use the idea or even improve upon it. For me it will do exactly what I want it for.

Any questions I would be glad to answer.

Your solution looks right on, and as you say, appears that it could be used in other ways as well. I must say it does look a bit humorous to see that big router on a mini-lathe.

Your jig looks great!!

If you remove the metal stop and guide and replace it with a piece of MDF or wood you can make a guide which follows the curve of a bowl and flute a bowl with that rig. You end up with a bunch of guides. To make the curved guide you place the uncut new guide stock on your jig and scribe the profile of the bowl onto the guide. Then use a bandsaw or other means to cut the guide into a curve. You can even put stops on the guide.

one improving idea would be to use a dremel tool instead of the big router and turn pens

I thought about a dremel tool but the amount of different bits for a router are far greater than a dremel tool. As far as taking the fence off, I designed it so that all I have to do is flip it around and it will not have a fence on the other end. I hope to put it through some tests this week. I need to glue up some blanks.

yes the big routers do have a big source of bits BUT they are too big for pens work so sooner or later I will rig the dremel router similar to your your setup if the LORD permit
