I need to get a mobile base for a Jet 1442. I've been drawing a blank for something this big. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

casters

I saw casters from Woodcraft on a Oneway 1018 that are double locking. The wheels won't roll and they won't swivel when locked. The owner of the lathe, which is used for demos, says that the lathe is rock solid. I'm thinking about putting them on my 1018. They should also be good for the Jet 1442.

Woodcraft double locking casters

I think it is model (A) that works best with the right nut and bolt.

Casters

When I have to move my 1640 around, I bought some heavy duty teflon furnature glides. I think they were rated to 2000+lbs. Was $20 at BORG. Glides like butter and when done just remove and the lathe is solidly on the ground again.

Ken I probably still have the photos of my mobile base for my Powermatic 2035. It might be overkill for just moving the lathe around the shop but I had to move mine up a ramp and into a trailer to get it to my new shop. I built wooden and steel wheel supports that fit on each set of legs. I jack up the lathe using an inexpensive hydralic car jack and put the legs on. I have 300 lbs of gravel on my 750 lathe and it works great. It's just a little slow if you want to move the lathe 3 feet. If your interested e-mail me at home johnclucas@charter.net

Vega Tool Base

Ken,

I went throught the same search when i was trying to fit a base under my 3520, the only one i found was the Vega Machine Mover system. It comes in three sizes so measure the legs of your lathe and call Packard, they can order one for you. The Vega website has a description if you want to research it.
I have one under my 3520 and really like it, it is the only mobile base that i have found that actully sits on the floor while not actually being rolled around.
If you have any questions send me an email.

I modified a standard Delta table-saw mobility base for my 1642 Jet lathe.

You will notice that the long stretchers are missing. They were too short to reach between the legs and anyway I didn't want them in the way. So I cut them off.

On the other hand, the width between the corner supports (C) was too long. The solution was to cut a section out in order to fit the stance of the lathe stand. Detail "A" shows the welds. I also reinforced the cross-members by inserting and bolting 0.120 wall square tubes inside prior to welding them back together.

The cam-lock caster had to be relocated (B) to the center. I placed this on the tail-stock end (the headstock end is supported by the dual wheel side).

Additionally, I bolted the corner supports directly to the base (C). THis more than makes up for the long stretchers.

The weight of the 1642 is just at the max limit recommended by the manufacturer. I think the frame could support more, but not so sure about the plastic wheels. I would think they would have to be replaced by something sturdier.
