Summary: I noticed that the history of posts in the Main Forum only went back 30 pages to about April 17, 2009. I tried entering names of forum members haven't posted since that date, but the names weren't recognized. Next I went to the Notable Members List and selected the name of one of our earliest members and was able to view this thread from 2006. Next I added a post to this thread to see if it would bump to top of the the current threads or remain missing from view. After doing this, it appears that all of the old threads dating back to April, 2004 when the original vBulletin 3 forum went live. I'm not sure why the old threads weren't visible or why posting in an old thread fixed the problem, but it apparently did.

At this time, I haven't tried to update the Newbie Forum and it's history only goes back 30 pages to April 17, 2009.

Run, do not walk from this scam. eventually you will be asked to post some money to assure your validity and you will never hear from them again. It is a scam that has been around for quite a while. Hopefully helpful, dustpan.

Sounds like that should be "Piece" instead. Sad part is, that notwithstanding all the publicity these scams have gotten, they continue to find people people willing to cough up the $$.

You might want to scan the members list - the ones with "0" posts. I looked at the "P's" and quit a few were obviously of the same ilk as the one who pm'd -e-

We now actively scan and approve/reject each new member. Some of those old members were initial spam before we refined the review process. We are getting hit by spambots, which sign up for a new user. Then they typically only post one message.

On an annual basis I clean out all the old users which have inactivity. That will catch the ones that got in before we changed the policy.

The only detriment to the new policy so far is that an occasional member signs up and tries to post something immediately.

on a more serious note, the private message was most likely just to first step in a more serious mining operation. our email addresses were probably ported off the site, and depending upon the sophistication of the spiders, other profile info was might have been obtained.

i hope not -- i get enough scamming krap as it is now.

so here's a good question:

over the years there have been many bogus members added to forums. WHY would so much energy be put into this activity? What's the payoff for so much effort?.

sadly, the answer most likely has to do with money -- data mining is a very lucrative activity.

with one simple application, the 'spider' can log on, and pull out every member-profile that legitimate members unwittingly set 'public'. then, linking to other data warehouses, one can develop very informative databases.

most would be shocked at what information can pieced together from seemingly unrelated data-stores, and how much money this data is worth!!!

and it makes me damned angry that someone's making money off my info and i'm left with the krap...but i'm certain everyone else feels the same.

lastly, there is no quick-fix for this type of data-mining. all you can do is to include multiple levels of security to reduce the risk without eliminating legitimate new users. members might want to consider eliminating sensitive information from their profiles, such as complete birthdates, etc.

alas, since this morning, i have received over 20 bogus emails to my AAW email address...yesterday i received none.

Don't ever register for a domain name then...

Your email address then attracts huge masses of garbage, because they just let it hang out there in the breeze. Seems like domain registrars would get their act together and make it much more difficult to access this information by a bot.... but nooooooo......
 
Anyone care to find out how readily available your personal profile on this or any other forum is on the Net? Just "google" the name you use to log in. 🙄

Yes, all is well, unless someone using software like "httrack" decides to download all of the user info and make it available to spammers and con-artists

Foolish me. I tried soaking my punky turning blanks in viagara 1/2 and 1/2 with solvent, like I would with glue or laquer, and it doesn't work nearly as well for the punky wood . The glue and lacquer or Pentacryl are all much better. None of those spam sites mention a single thing about turning wood, what a rip off! I am just so darn gullable. I thought since they visit our site they'd be helpful, silly me. LOL

I still don't know what Phentermine or Pentermine is. But we had a lot of spams about that. Maybe it would work !!!

I've processed a bunch of spalted hackberry, and it can sure be frustrating to get a clean finish on it without tearout.

Problem with treating your wood with Viagra is you have to work so fast cause it only stiffens the wood for a few hours. Try Cialis. At least its supposed to last a few days. I tried the viagra stuff once too and the bowl drooped before I could display it. That's OK for bowls, I just called it art and sold it for more, but it would be a bummer for spindle work!! Darn spammers!!

This is a test. While looking for problems, I found one. Posts made before April 17, 2009 seem to be missing except that they can be found if looking at a member's profile. Testing to see if I can bump this old thread.

Possibly, if I had spent more time searching. It's not quite so easy to get to posts that are earlier than April 17, 2009. I left the Newbie forum as is. I think that we should ask Michael to look at this to see if he can figure out why there are only thirty pages of posts showing ... And why bumping a thread that is older suddenly restores everything. I'm concerned about things which suddenly start working correctly might just as suddenly quit working correctly.

I also should mention that this problem does NOT exist on the beta forum.

A belated welcome to the forum, Stan. The missing threads issue was resolved although it is still a mystery of why they weren't visible until I used the search function to find an old thread. After that, all of the missing threads were suddenly visible. I'm still searching to find some missing gallery images between December 2013 through August 2014.
