my jet mini with variable speed has lost its tailstock allignment. any suggestions in how to correct this? also, i think its noisier than the day i bought it 3 years ago, even though i recently WD40'd the innereds of the headstock.
If you bolted your lathe down, the table may not be exactly level and square. You can change the alignment by shimming the feet which effectivly twist the frame into alignment. I had this same problem when I bolted my jet mini to the work bench. I since moved it and it sits free and is in perfect alignment.
I'm not sure the use of WD40 into the Headstock is such a good idea? although the use of WD40 it appears is much mis-used and often crops up in the numerous Forums on the WEB
WD40 is a Water Repelent and is meant to Clean and Lubricate Electrical Components.
If you spray WD40 onto Oily or Greased Surfaces i.e. Bearings it will wash away a certain amount of these Lubricants in fact it states on the Can that it will Dissolve Grease [See Cleans and Protects on the Can].
One of it's components is Petroleum Disstillate.
The Noise you are experiancing may well be due to a lack of Grease in the Bearings?
Actually it may be the headstock that's out of alignment. You can loosen the 4 hex bolts that hold the headstock aligned and then align it with the tailstock. This should solve your problem. As for a noisy headstock bearings, the handwheel is probably too tight. Loosen the screw that holds the handwheel in place and then unscrew the handwheel (I don't remember if it's left or right handed) The handwheel should be tight enough so there isn't any slop in the movement of the spindle but loose enough to keep the noise down.
I fixed our club lathe that had these problems. If the handwheel doesn't solve your problems then it is probably a bearing. Run the lathe without the belt. If it's noisey it's the motor bearing. If it only gets noisey when the belt is running the spindle then it's probably the spindle bearings.
