Had a little set back with ice storm sat/sunday. Lost phone/cable/internet.
Finally 5 am Monday, lost power. More than 400,000 in Mich lost power as of Sunday. My wood stove in living room fireplace kept me cozy. Lost 2 river birch (15-16" diameter) trees, (may wait for the trunk to spalt!!!!) and a bunch of limbs from various pines and hardwoods. Had a few photo ops, but haven't looked at them blown up yet. Couldn't break up the monotony of wrapping xmas presents with turning, so decided to visit Harbor Freight last nite. (yes, I bought myself some presents!!!)
I was outside Sunday am, perusing the possible horse pasture fence damage, and heard 15 branches/trees go down around me and the neighbors. I was judicious where I walked!!!!!!
Power back on at 9 am today. Was worrying at 6 am that I'd have to haul water from neighbor to the 2 horses, and take many woodshaving plastic bags of freezer stuff from basement into the unattached garage to stay frozen. Some people will be without til Saturday (which was predicted for my area) . My daughter and family and I usually go to church tonite and then pizza and gift exchanging. However , the church is without power and heat. The one Pizza place does. My daughter does. Ace hardware waited on me Monday with flashlights!!!!
At least I don't have to do those back breaking chores and I'll be able to cook xmas dinner tomorrow for my daughter and family-unless more devastation-the ice hasn't melted and more damage could come,-and sneak in a little wood turning. Too tired this afternoon to start any project.
May you all have a healthy and prosperous New year!!!!! Gretch

Glad you're back in the power Gretch!!

I'd be worried about freezing pipes, etc. Hope that all works out OK.

Sorry (?) to hear about the River Birch, but not too sorry (!) - I've turned a bunch of this species recently and when spalted, is really kind of pretty. I've attached an image of a piece turned from spalted river birch I made earlier this year. (Maybe something to look forward to?)

Have a great Holiday, and I hope the power situation in the region gets back to normal soon!

Stay warm!!

Rob

Gretch, wish you well and with power always
happy holidays to you and family, and the rest of AAW

And a Very Merry Christmas to you all from down here in Dunedin New Zealand. Have a great holiday and happy turning in the new year.

Cheers Ian

Gretch, I hope everything is working out well. What a difference a couple of hours can make. I live just a couple of hours north of you and we were spared. We got some more snow but no ice at all and we just have a beautiful Christmas. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is out of power in these temperatures and especially at this time of year. Merry Christmas everyone, no matter what your circumstances are!

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone is sharing this holiday season with family and friends. My two sons are here for a week, the cinnamon rolls are rising and will be ready for brunch, and then we will find out what Santa brought.

Merry Christmas to all! Please say a prayer today for all our service members who can't be with families today.
And may everyone have a safe holiday!

Now to see what Santa brought everyone....

"All I want for Christmas is my power back on!" was/is the most requested Christmas gift in my neck of the woods. Ours went out the first night of the storm and came back on about 24 hours latter. It was probably good to be first. We have a generator so it was just a little inconvenience (and my shop got real dark while working on a HF). I had a few trees come down…still a lot of weight on them, more could fall!

pics. first installment

The 2 river birches ruined, and branches down from my "honeymoon" tamarack into one of my gardens. It has slowly lost branches the last couple of years with wind. Getting kinda ugly.

2nd installment

There is beauty in this damage. For some reason a 3rd picture can't get attached. Power has remained on, but internet/phone/cable out again for 12-14 hours. Better get this in while I am "still "alive", Gretch

About 20 years ago, had an ice storm come through and knocked out power for a week here. Anyway the fist day was out walking around taking pictures and was at a park half mile from the house. A guy saw me an stopped and asked if I needed a ride? I stated that I didn't but was out taking pictures and he gave me the dam nest look like are you NUTS.
