Last week our local woodworkers club had a booth in the mall display of community activities. We had 2 mini lathes and a Jet 1236 set up and humming all weekend. Gave away tops to kids and turned a bunch of pens for the Freedom Project.

It always amazes me at the generosity of my fellow woodturners. I bought a radius skew in Richmond and completely butchered it when I tried to sharpen it. Rob Wallace (the head of our turners group) spent about 5 minutes fixing it and showing me the correct procedure to sharpen it in the future. Others in the group helped me with my technique in using the tool. I'm gaining on it but still suck at skew usage.

We have a monthly meeting and I always learn something from our more established turners. I also appreciate the fact that they will provide constructive criticism and help you over the hurdles.

To those that don't yet belong to a local club, join one if at all possible. You won't find better people anywhere. Forums are great but you can't beat hands on tutoring.

i sure do agree with you there.
in the few months that i have been attending my local club i have learned quite a lot and my turning skills are improving faster than i ever imagined.
