Maple Medley Exhibit Entries

Wow That is incredible. I guess that's why I didn't try to enter this year. I knew I didn't have the time to make a piece that would compete with the quality of work seen there. Can't wait to see the show in person.

Maple Medley

They are all full of the magic of letting the joy hiding in the wood be seen.

Applause to all the entries -- indeed they are all winners!!!

That sure is alot of entries and each is as nice as the next one. Fantastic work. One day I hope to be able to just be able to come up with an idea let alone make it. Great work by all.

Ed,
I agree with everyone...the work submitted is very well conceived and crafted.
Any idea yet when the folks will be notified as to whether they made the exhibit? Also, is it OK for us to post our entries on other sites such as WoW?

The jurying is done and over the next few weeks, letters will be prepared and go out to the 104 turners who applied for the exhibit with 180 pieces. A huge thanks to all who participated - that kind of involvement helps make a great exhibition.

A letter will be sent to each participant, hopefully in early April. If someone wants to post a picture of their submitted piece, that is quite all right.

The exhibit will premiere at the Hartford Symposium and then it will be on display in St. Paul at the AAW Wood Art Gallery September 12 through December 19, 2010. If you want to see the entire exhibit including the juried portion, invited artists, and the jurors, an exhibit catalog will be available for sale after the symposium.

How could anyone do justice to everyone and judge the entries in something like that?

There is an incredible diversity of styles and talent there.......

Odie,

An aspect of a juried show is the quirks of the jury. The jury process isn't necessarily fair or even across the board as each juror has a different set of experiences and values.

in addition jurors have a vision of the show as a whole in their mind and to some extent evaluate how specific pieces fit or do not fit their vision of the show.
for instance I saw several pieces that were similar to each other.
Do you avoid "duplication" or pick similar pieces?

I've been rejected, selected and been a judge. you gotta play to win!

I'm confident of two things
1. The judges do a fair an honest evaluation
2. It is clear from the entries that a good show will result.

congratulations to all that entered,
Al

Thanks for the input, Al......

It stands to reason that what you say is what must happen. A judge must make a choice, and opinion is the basis for that choice.

One thing that being a regular contributor to this forum has made clear to me......I have an opinion, among many, regarding what I like best about woodturning philosophy, design, and technique. I am neither right nor wrong.

A judge will be much like me, and it's impossible to make a choice that will be popular with everyone.

I finally got a chance to review the submitted pieces along with their accompanying text and I'd like to extend a big THANK YOU, not only to the artists who created these fabulous pieces, but also to those who have volunteered their time to help make Maple Medley a reality.
