Making scrapers

Hi guys.

I want to make some scrapers(square end and rounded end) from 1/2" thick O-1 steel bar I have. (I'll heat treat it myself in my electronically controlled heat treating oven.)

My questions:

1. The steel bar I have is 1.5" wide and I wonder if 1.5" wide chisel is useful or I should go for narrower (1", 0.75")? wide scrapers.
2. How long should be the scraper's tang(tang is a part of the tool that goes into handle)

BTW What other 1/2' thick flat turning tools make sense? (Skew chisels?)

Thanks,
Alex

how you make the scrapers and heat treat i cannot help, but use at least one 1" or 1.5" scraper straight edge and several .5 or .75 scrapers, i think the smaller ones are most useful to reshape to get to unique shapes for special cuttings :cool2:

If you can, just machine the ferrule end to 1/2" round, but about 2+ inches long.
You could make dandy shear scrapers out of it too.

It sound like it will work, but if it is round bar; doesn't it need a flat on top?
