I said the other day I was not a paid member of AAW and had ordered a subscription via Amazon.com. Well lo and behold, today I got a welcpme ben in the mail with my membership card, Spring issue of the mag, the directory and the sharpening video. All this thru Amazon and I did not see anything in Amazon about the membership, just the subscription. I guess the pricing was established for the membership also. Whatever, I am now happy.

AAW membership website "deals"

Info from the AAW website, (the one this forum is on.) states:
$40 for a general membership, $45 for a family, and $18 for youth under 25 years old.

You were lucky you got the membership too, but I'm not sure Amazon.com is the best way to become a member. As you see they charge $50.65 for the year, Amazon.com listing:

"American Woodturner by Amer Assn Of Woodturners - Magazine Subscription - 4 issues / 12 months
Magazine Subscriptions: See all items
Buy new: *$50.65 ($12.66/issue)"

We are currently looking into this membership thru Amazon. We are also determining if in fact membership is being solicited thru phonecalls.

I know we just posted a note on the homepage indicating otherwise, but it is possible this is legitimate (although more expensive).

The AAW office has just investigated this membership thru Amazon. It turns out that individual memberships have been procured thru Amazon.

The AAW uses the EBSCO service to provide libraries and schools with a subscription. That service is apparently used throughout the system so that institutions can do blanket orders of multiple magazines. All fine and good. That has been in place for over 15 years.

In 2002, EBSCO expanded their coverage and it included Amazon. The AAW was not aware of this. The Amazon coverage provided a different route for membership. In essence they used their website as a front end to AAW membership, and for this service an additional $10 was charged.

EBSCO also does some phone solicitations. The AAW board has a majority opinion to do the following:
- keep the EBSCO service for libraries and schools
- drop the Amazon portion of the contract
- request EBSCO to drop phone solicitations to individuals

I am sorry for any confusion this may have caused our membership.

I can see asking that the phone solicitations come to a stop, but have you noticed an increase in members through Amazon. It seems like that would be pretty good advertising to me. Just a thought.

The number of amazon subscriptions is less than 1/2 of 1% of the entire membership. So that's a good theory but it hasn't worked out that way. Plus it is an additional $10 on a $40 membership fee, which works out to 25%, so that is not a great benefit from that angle either.
