Looking for Jet parts

Bill, I contacted Jet/VMH Tool Group for a replacement motor and was told the price was $140. plus shipping. These motors have to be available thru some other supplier, that's what I'm looking for. Mark

Before you spend a lot of money for a new motor, have you verified that the motor is bad? The most common problem by far on the Jet mini lathe motor is a failed start/run capacitor which can be replaced for less than $10. Next, would be the ON-OFF switch and the power cord. Usually if the motor fails, you will get a VERY VERY strong smell of burning insulation along with some smoke before it gives up the ghost. If you turn the motor on and it hums, but does not run then that is an indication that the capacitor is shot and not a problem with the motor. Let me know what testing you have done and maybe you will be able to repair it without getting a new motor. At the worst, a motor shop can rewind it for much less than the cost of a new motor.

I second that advice checking the capacitor. I had a capacitor fry on a Jet mini-lathe just last year.

And don't order it online from Jet, order it over the phone, because shipping will be $20, instead of about $12. I'm not sure why...

I second the switch advice from Bill. About a month ago, I had the switch on my JET 1014 fail. What a POS!!
I had to pull it out, take it apart, clean and reassemble it to get it to work.
I have purchased a 4S box, plug, light switch and 4S cover to completely take the stock switch out and install the new switch/plug set up into the cabinet I built to put the lathe on.

Thanks guys for your input. I picked up a capacitor at a motor repair shop today for about $10.00, installed it and the motor works fine. Mark

I am glad to hear that the problem is solved so as Larry says go buy some turning tools from the money that you saved.

I have recommended this solution to a number of owners of Jet lathes who figured that they would need to get a new motor and it has always fixed the problem. I believe that the problem is that Jet uses a capacitor that is rated only for starting a motor, but an oil filled capacitor designed for both start and run duty is really what should be used.

Actually I think it is a start/run capacitor. I tried using a capacitor from a local supplier that was supposed to be rated the same and blew it out in short order. It wasn't til I got the correct capacitor from Jet that I had no more problems.

inflation

I see there has been no further info in the past 4 years or so, but it still came up on a web search and solved my problem. The price of the capacitor is now $15.81 plus tax plus shipping. Horrible price but still better than a new motor. The only difference in shipping, if you call, is that USPS is an option, and a good one for that small a part.
Don't take the motor apart thinking you need to replace it where it connects inside, it can all be handled inside the capacitor cover. Mine hasn't arrived yet, but when I got the capacitor out, there was no question that that was my problem, the insulation was melted off of the wires.

Thanks for refreshing

this thread. My capacitor died when a friend was borrowing the Jet mini last year--he fixed it. BUT when I ran the lathe recently the capacitor cover is very hot and when I am running the Jet it is tripping the GFI after about 15-20 mins. From reading this thread I believe my friend did not use the correct capacitor. I have ordered one from Jet since this sounded like an easy thing to fix. 🙂
