Looking for Jet lathe replacement part

The speed selector assembly on our school's Jet 1442VS is severely damaged and needs to be replaced. I assume the damage was caused by a careless student. Trouble is the assembly has been discontinued. I tried ereplacement parts, mmtoolparts and ebay – no luck. So our big Jet lathe sitting in the school is now practically useless. The school is run by a charity organization in Mexico for disadvantaged kids. Any ideas on where to find one?
 
Could it be that the numerical plate is loose and not indicating the speed properly? Or could it be that the pin that is supposed to hit the holes to hold the speed constant isn't engaging? We've had both those problems with our school 1440s. Seems like there was another problem with the speed controller--all of which we fixed without new parts. Can you tell us more about what exactly is wrong?

Thanks, Dean. I'm going to the school this morning and will take it apart and see exactly what's going on and let you know.

1442 does not have a seed display
 
My apologies. I jumped to conclusions before examining the control properly. After I removed the handle, I saw that what I thought were deep grooves between the holes were superficial. It turns out that the handle was just loose. So far it's been working fine.

Between the handle and the body of the headstock there is a disc (can't recall exactly what its made of and I don't have it handy to look) that lists the speed achieved at each notch. As you say, it doesn't display the lathe's actual speed, but merely what it's supposed to be at each handle position.
 
I used (electrian) a wall on/off switch on a delta but it had a separate speed control from on and off.....a dimmer switch could work if this happens in future

Heard a dimmer switch shouldn't be used for such an application. Thought of putting one on my old grinder but was told not to do it.
 
My grinder only only has 1 speed....i would try wall on/off switch.....those switches designed for life of house.....the delta Reeves drive lathe was designed for repair shop....very frustrating....good luck
