Looking for cabochons

[FONT=&quot]You can find plenty of them on line with a Google “cabochon†search. Also, they are rather easy to make with clear casting resin and whatever you choose to put inside. This was a gift to a friend who is a member of the Red Hat Society. It is a lidded box, and the cabochon is a simple Red Hat broach covered with clear casting resin in a small muffin-frosting container. Of course the cabochon must be turned to shape and polished. Ed Davidson was very kind to advise me on how it is done.
Luck and fun...

Thanks, it was a fun project and well received.
Mike, the white plastic muffin frosting containers have and inside diameter of 70mm by 30mm deep. You could cast whatever you want inside and turn it to the diameter you need, or find a wider casting container. Ed seems to have some good sized cabochons ready to go. Of course, if you are desirous of a finished product to your specs, Ed might make a run of what you want, or not.
The casting, turning, and polishing parts are not much trouble. Finding just the right "thing" to cast may not be so simple.

Someplace around here, I have a paperweight with my orthodontic braces embedded in polyester resin, which I cast about 20 years ago. I didn't exactly "turn" it, but it's round. The shaping progressed from a wood rasp through sandpaper through Brasso, maybe with toothpaste intermediate too. Just about as tedious as can be. For a simple or ornate cabochon, Ed's prices look too good to pass up.

Mike,

The best place to find Cabs that big is at the Gem and Mineral Shows (should be some in your area). Also look up fossil and rock shops and talk to the owner, many of them are lapidary specialists and can make cabs to suit you.

Lastly you may look to an overseas source (possibly china), but first it would help to know what other purposes a cab that size would be used for so you can locate a source based on the other product useage. Alibaba and Thomas Register are good sources for locating manufacturers of such items.

Good Luck,
Chris

Cabochons

I spent an afternoon some years ago with Dennis Elliot and he was using Avonite, a synthetic counter top material to make the center jewel in his wall hangings. it comes in a large variety of colors and he was getting free cut- off pieces from a local countertop shop.
