Log weight app for iphone?

Last year I bought a trailer and souped it up with a winch, lifting arch, snatch block pulley and log tongs.............just for hauling turning wood in log form. I seem to get called up a good bit by some of our club members.....😀

I have been able to find log weight calculators for my main computer, but have not found one for the iphone. Does anyone know of a good one that is easy to download to my iphone?

I want to be able to calculate the log weight in the field so I do not overload the axle on my trailer.

Roger, it's getting late and my eyes were blury .... I thought your topic header said, "LOST weight iPhone app" I jumped right on that for my iPhone! 😱

you've got an iphone - and if there's no app for that - why not just find a web-based calculator that works well on your phone and just bookmark the page on your phone?

After searching a good bit, that is what I have done for now...........not the best way to go, but it will work provided I can get cell service where I am located in the field.

Thanks!

I was on the verge of reporting a spam post about some weight loss scheme. 😀

What's wrong with a ruler, calculator notepad, and tables from Hoadley's book.

It's easy to gauge when the trailer is overloaded -- the springs are against the stops and one of the tires blow out. 🙂 Anything less than that and you're good to go.

Kind of complicated.

Easy to figure the cubic inches/feet in the logs, but the weight per unit is variable. Each species of wood has a unique density, and that density changes as the moisture content changes.

Assuming your trailer has springs or torsion axles, measure the distance between the axle and the frame with the trailer unloaded. When loading and this dimension is reduced by about 2.5 inches, you are near the capacity of the springs/axles.

If no springs, then gauging the bulge of the tires is a fairly good way. When the tires look overloaded, they probably are. Always keep trailer tires inflated to the max pressure marked on the tire sidewall.

I thought most cell phone calculators were able function without internet access. The old fashioned graphite/cellulose calculators will.

Radius' x radius' x 3.14 x length' = cubic feet. Approximate weight of most domestic hardwoods logs can be figured at about 45 to 55 lbs/cu ft. Hickory, hedge, oak, and other dense woods approx 55 to 65 lbs/cu ft. Example, A 10' long ash log 18" in diameter; .75 x .75 x 3.14 x 10 x 52 = 918 lbs. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/weigt-wood-d_821.html (oopsed the radius, corrected now)

But like Bill said, if the axle ain't against the frame and the tires don't blow....... Good to go.

Oh, and good luck with those lose weight apps.

I remember loading my truck up so much once that I had to stop at the nearest gas station and fill the tires to max. My trailer is much too small and I don't have a place to store that much wood so I guess I don't need a calculator other than if the log is too heavy to move easily, don't put it on the trailer.
I do remember dragging one home once. It was in a field about a mile from the house and the land owner said I could have it. I just wrapped a chain around it and drug it home. Of course I did live in the country where no one would object of even find it particularly out of the ordinary. They probably just thought i had a wood stove.

Take a look at sawmill aps. The Norwood Sawmills ap looks pretty straight forward for log weight. Length, diameter, species, calculate.

The Norwood app looks like it will do the calculations. But, no reviews on android or ios.

It's only 99¢ though, and the board feet calculator looks promising enough that I am thinking of giving it a try for the bf calculator alone.

I bought the Norwood app.

It seems to work ok. Several scenarios were input and log weights checked against the calculations from the Engineers Toolbox website. I did not cross check the bf calculator against my Doyle stick, but the numbers seemed reasonable.

I did shutoff wifi on my non cellular tablet and the app was able to do it's calculations without internet access. The app works fine on my phone in airplane mode also, so it should work in remote areas without cellular signal.

The app has a cell phone UI, works fine on a phone, and misses taking advantage of the extra real estate that a tablet affords. The display on a tablet is useable though, just not as large as it could be.

The, "axle ain't against the frame" method will still be my go to method.

Thanks Dale for this........when I searched for it yesterday, I only saw it listed for android.........not iphone. Your info allowed me to get it, so I now have it as well..........thanks much!!!
