My name is Leland. I started carving a bar of Ivory soap with a plastic knife when I was 4. I turned a mallet and a plug to keep the rain out of the clothes line pole when I was 8.
This past year I have rough turned 163 bowls and finish turned 36 for friends, relatives and a charity where 3 sold for $250. The bowls are from trees fallen in our neighborhood: Siberian elm, Chinese elm, California live oak, Claro, Japanese maple, Tasmanian blackwood, Black acacia, English oak, tipu, plum, Black oak, Modesto ash. I have used denatured alcohol soak, air dry and coating bowls with AnchorSeal and Rockler green wood sealer.
I like the book "Turning bowls by Richard Raffen". I like Mike Mahoney's videos.
I am very happy after 5 attempts to get my Grizzly G0462 turning 560 rpm by slowly taking links out of a link belt. The belt that came with it was running 800 rpm after turning a few bowls a warranty replacement also turned 800 rpm but the Jason Industrial 3L-LINK-5 Accu-Link Adjustable Link V-Belt, 3L Profile, 3/8" Width, 5' Length adjusts down to 560 rpm.
Here are some pictures and videos of my shop and bowls. I look forward to sharing information on this forum.
