Can I use spray lacquer and turn it into brushing lacquer? Can I add retarder or thinner to it to slow down the drying so it can be brushed? I have so problem with lacquer sealer but the finish drys to fast and it leaves brush marks.
You could, but will most likely have to sand out brush marks. Most spray lacquer isn't intended to go on that thick in a single layer and you may end up with blushing or pinholes from trapped solvent (solvent pop).
Retarder will slow down the drying, thinner, speed it up.
I use the spray lacquer cut 50/50 with thinner for a sealer that gets wiped on.
Steve,
Do you spray your final coats of lacquer? I have a spray gun but I really don't have a good place to spray it. I have tried in my garage in tthe past but it smells up the whole house.
I spray real nasty stuff. Catalyzed acrylic urethane with a space suit and forced air hood on.
But, I sprayed lacquer for a long time in my attached garage. Use a box fan with a furnace filter taped on the back to provide airflow. Clean the place like never before. Spray a light mist of water on the floor so any dust you kick up doesn't go airborne. Wear a good mask with good replaceable filters. Open the door for ventilation. Make sure that any vents, like heater or air return, are closed.
I also use a small spray booth, like the ones at the bottom of the page here http://www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=18
If you live in an area that gets too cold, with conventional lacquers you are kind of out of luck. With catalyzed you can use a different reducer.
