Well today Jim came to my shop to give me some hands on lessons on turning. This was the first time I had ever seen woodturning done in person and I had a blast. I got to see how I was going about things all wrong and learn from someone who really kinows what he is doing. I learned how to sharpen my bowl gouge and how to properly turn a bowl and a platter.

Jim got here around 10:00 and did not leave until 4:30! He made my HF 34706 sing and even got the POS Ridgid lathe I replaced with the HF to hum a little! I had a great day with a GREAT guy and all it cost me was lunch, some wood, and some metal building purlins.

We made a splated hackberry bowl and a mesquite platter from the blanks I am selling to raise money for our adoption fund (see my sig line for my website, sorry for the imbedded ad, I just had to do it!).

Take a look at the picture to see what we made. I know these are nothing fancy and Jim would probaly not be very proud of them since they were made as demonstration pieces but I sure am proud to have them.

Thank you VERY much Jim for grasciously giving me your time to get me hooked on this dang habit, I mean hobby!

For everyone else, if you ever get a chance to help out a newbie, please do it. Without Jim I would have ended up ditching turning and letting the lathe sit in the corner. He has helped add me to your ranks!

Jimmy is a great guy! When I saw your post asking for help I was the person who emailed Jimmy to let him know you were out there and in need of some help. He is usually on another forum. I have flown down to Texas to turn wood with Jimmy on two seperate occasions. He has opened his shop and his home to me. He is the best! VWNW

And, by the way Curtis, I'm not so sure anyone would be ashamed of those pieces. They look pretty good to me. Congrats on the pieces and on reaching out. It's amazing, how nice folks are if you give em a chance.

Take care,
Dietrich

Nice job!

Hey, those look great!!! How'd you like turning the hackberry? Did you have trouble with tearout, or was it just me?

There's no substitute for a good teacher. I'm looking forward to my next lesson with Bill Grumbine.
