Aloha... I'm a woodturner in Hawaii and just acquired an older Jet lathe - model JWL 1438-1. Hoping that someone has or can direct me to someplace where I can get a manual. The best that I can tell this is an early 1980's vintage

Try the Jet (WMH)Woodworking machine website, they have lots of manuals in PDF. Your machine looks pretty early it may or may not still be listed.

I just checked their downloadable manuals page, but saw nothing described as that model. Knowing the 6-digit (sometimes more) "Stock No." might yield a better result.

Either way, I can say from personal experience 🙂 that if you contact their Technical Service folks, they'll do as much as possible to provide you with a manual or anything else you need.

Thanks for the help. I also checked the Jet website and found the new model similiar to the JWL 1438-1. Don't know what the "stock no." is or where to find it. I have the serial number...is this the same? Anyway, I will contact the service dept. and see if they can help.

The serial number is a third number. Both it and the Model Number are used as most people have come to expect. OTOH, the Stock Number seems to be an alternative designation for the Model Number. For example a Model JWL-1642EVS lathe is Stock No. 708359.

On the manuals download page, the Stock Number appears in the first column, next to the Model Number. Notice however, they've labeled that column "Part Number", so it seems that customers aren't the only ones who get confused 😕 by the dual designations.

The only reason for it I can fathom is to assign a different Stock No. if some significant change in one or more parts was made to a given Model whose dimension-and-feature-related model number was kept the same, but needed a unique Stock number to distinguish which part(s) differed between them.

JET JWL 1438 Manual

I've searched all the forums and websites and seems that this is the only model 1438 in existance...???? Seriously, haven't heard back from JET and have not seen another mention of this model anywhere. I'm surprised since it is a real stable performer and ruggedly built. The Reeves drive works flawlessly after being cleaned and I'm ready to do a project.

Thank you all for your help and if I find a manual I'll post it for all to have....Mahalo Nui Loa ( Thank you very much)

Have you contacted JET by merely e-mail or telephone? Telephone might work better. A few years ago, I found a Homelite gas chain saw as a roadside orphan. Online search for a manual didn't work. I telephoned Homelite, and told them a fib about buying it at a garage sale. They sent me a manual, with postage paid.

Recently, I bought four new electric chain saws to reinforce my collection. Guess what brand I bought.😉

Finally got through to JET and they emailed me a parts diagram for the headstock. Said that was all they had. Would still like a manual as this has no parts numbers or information outside of the pictures. Thanks to all...
