I have been reading the posts for this lathe, now that I've decided to upgrade from my Jet Mini I have reached the conclusion that this is the "best for the money". Not to knock the Powermatic 3520, it's just more money than I can spend. I would like to add the Vicmarc Outboard Turning attatchment, but can't find it available anywhere, apparently Craft Supplies doesn't carry it now. Does anyone know where it can be purchased?

you can buy the powermatic outboard stand same place you bought 1642 lathe, vicmark i believe bolts onto lathe, you would have to do some engineering

welcome and enjoy

Possibly Woodworkers Emporium???

Carl:

Woodworkers Emporium from Las Vegas (or Henderson?) is supposedly a Vicmarc distributor (they've had displays at recent AAW Symposia), but looking at their web site, it is not clear if they are still in business or not. You may want to check them out thoroughly before placing an order with them, if this is even possible. Perhaps a "local" turner can provide some feedback whether or not they're presently doing business, and what their reputation is. I've never dealt with them, and have only posted a link to their page on my Woodturning Links web page in case others are interested in a possible source for Vicmarc equipment.

I also thought about adding the Vicmarc outboard tool rest to my Jet 1642-2, but in retrospect, didn't think I'd really use it that much. Big bowls generally don't sell, and I can't justify the expense, etc. of adding this feature, when most of what I turn and produce for galleries is 14" or less in diameter. While it would be nice to crank out a 20"+ piece once in a while, I have settled for 'practicality' and 'reality' over being able to turn something "big".

You will find that the Jet 1642 is an excellent lathe; well worth the money.

Carl,

Welcome to the forum. Ditto pretty much what Rob said. I did a couple of 15-3/4" pieces when I first got a 1642-2 just to test the limit, but nothing over 14" since, and no desire to go bigger.

I bought mine from craft supplies about 3 months ago. Give them a call.

Carl,
I made the same decision re: the Jet 1642 vs the PM 3520 and am very pleased with my choice. As far as the Outboard Turning Attachment goes, I would suggest you make several 15-3/4" bowls or platters and see if you really need to go bigger. Unless you are committed to making some very large special project, save the money for awhile. Have fun with the small stuff. Bigger is not always better.
