Any 1442 owners have problem with spindle lock not engaging enough to stop spindle from turning? I can't hold button in hard enough to lock. When I hold button in and try to back chuck off it slips and pushes button out against me. No amount of force will engage lock enough to hold. I have chuck jammed and no other good way to hold spindle good enough to back chuck off. Been this way out of box but didn't pose problem til my chuck stuck. Derryl

Derryl,

I use to have that lathe, one thing I can tell you is the tabs that the spindle lock hits against are part of the pot-metal pulley. These tabs can be broken off if to much force is used. A quick way to check is remove the cover and have a look at the pulley on the spindle shaft. The tabs are located on the side closest to the hand wheel. If by chance you have broken them, you'll need to get a new pulley. If the tabs are whole, it's also possible that the tabbed side of the pulley is not set in the right place on the spindle shaft. Those pulleys are prone to breaking if handled to rough, if you are the original owner I'd call Jet and see what they recommend.

I always wanted to put a lock holder on the 1442, but never got around to it. I recently added this one to my 1642.

Thanks Dave, sounds like what could be problem. I'll pull cover tonight and check. Bought lathe new in Oct. 2010 but Jet will probably call it misuse or something but I will try to repair under warranty. It has not held since day one and I should have notified them at that time. Derryl

You'll be surprised, Jet is famous for their customer service. They really do go out of their way to try and help you.

Got my headstock back from Jet repair service center in Wichita yesterday. They replaced spindle, bearings, one side of spindle pulley that has the notches for the spindle lock. I got some washers from Craft Supply to go between chuck and spindle to prevent sticking. Jet covered the repair work 100%. Derryl

Always nice to hear of good service from a vendor. Jet has always been one of the best to deal with when I have had any questions or problems.
Thanks for sharing that.
