Trying to decide on which lathe to go with. Currently have a Jet 1014 non VS.

I mainly do boxes and segmented work, with the occassional pen and want to try some off center turning.

I do have a pretty good stable stand to use.

Unfortunately no room for a "big" lathe.

Which of the to lathes would you go with? Turning experiences on them?

Thanks!

Gerry

Jerry I bought the Jet 1220 VS before the Delta came out. I have been able to turn a couple of times on the Delta 46-460 (2 bowls, lidded box and some ornaments) and will say I wish it had been out at the time I bought my 1220. I probably would have bought the Delta VS. IMHO the fit and finish on it is better than my 1220 and the motor is bigger. Really a smooth, quiet machine.

I've had a Delta 46-460 for over a year (part of independent pre-release testing) and can't say enough positive things about this lathe. It's got indexing, reversing, variable speed and 3/4 horsepower. I've turned at least eight 12" diameter bowls, dozens of pepper grinders, and even more flower vases with it and not had any problems at all. My old small lathe was a Jet mini VS that I could stop with the hand wheel - no way could I do the same with this Delta!

Hate to sound like SWMBO, whose answer to "A or B?" is "C," but a Nova 16-24 would get you the swing you'll want and speeds you'll need for off-center work.

Won't break the bank, and the footprint is modest.

thanks! for the input.

I like my Jet mini but it looks like it is time to go to Delta. Besides it'll match all the other Delta equipment I have. Perhaps a nice shade of blue for the walls may be in order.

I have the Jet 1220VS ... it's a nice lathe with some nice features. Built well, powerful motor, quiet and smooth. The only thing I don't like is how variable speed is implemented because you still have belts and the variability is only within the range of the belt. If you choose the Jet, you won't be unhappy. Sounds like the Delta is a winner too.😉

I've never used either, but... if $$$ aren't an issue you know OneWay makes a 2416 that probably has about the same foot-print. But with the option of a 3HP motor, it certainly has more power then the Delta😀

Jet or Delta

[Hey, Waltben, I thought the1 vs version had the one horse? Am I wrong, or do you have to specify one horse on it? Thanky, MaxSIZE="3"][/SIZE]
