FINALLY..... ....the end of one of "those weeks".....! ! !

Last night, while taking a break from grading exams, (and shoveling very wet snow and sleet before it froze solid), I spent some time beta testing the AAW's NEW WEB SITE ! ! !

It has been a while since the AAW upgraded its electronic communications media, and a lot of work went into developing a more user-friendly and interactive web site. I was very favorably impressed by the layout and ease of access to information.

Although it is not yet "live", AAW chapter officers were sent a link to the test version of the site to give it a try (i.e. to a few hundred users), particularly to get feedback to enable 'tweaking' (but not twerking!) specific pages, to clean up broken links or find other bugs before it is officially launched. Those of you who are chapter presidents or chapter contact designees should have received a message from AAW Executive Director Phil McDonald earlier this week with links to follow to go to test the new web site, and to provide feedback (also via a response web page). We would appreciate hearing back from you with any problems, concerns, suggestions for improvement, or even simply "it works OK" comments.

The new web site site will have several new membership related pages, including the opportunity for each member to create their own personal profile page if they so choose, improved membership renewal and payment options, an on-line store for AAW logo products and publications, and fully interactive searches for member directory information, AAW member and chapter resources, and other improved communications possibilities. Additionally, each AAW chapter will be able to have its own searchable profile page that can include whatever information you would like to put up to introduce prospective members to your chapter (i.e. meeting days times, schedules, demonstrations, officer/membership information, images, galleries, etc.). For the first time we will now have a web-based electronic system where membership data, renewals, chapter information etc. and web site capabilities are fully integrated and very efficient.

All of this new web site development took some planning and lots of time investment with the web site developers; our Program Director, Linda Ferber was the point person working very hard over the past year+ on getting the AAW's web site ready for our 15,000+ members. This is yet another example of improved member services that the AAW is committed to.

If all goes as planned, and there are no major glitches or web page re-builds necessary, we might see the new web site 'go live' at www.woodturner.org over the next 10-14 days (...perhaps even sooner?). From what I saw last night, this is a welcome improvement that should serve us well.

I just had to share the good news we received from AAW Headquarters at our February telephonic board meeting on Wednesday evening, and after my chance to navigate and test the new web site. There's even a one-click link on the home page to the AAW Forums!!

When the new site goes live over the next week or two (and with apologies to Alka Seltzer), "Try it, you'll like it!!"

Looking forward to seeing (and using) the new site, Rob.......

I know it'll be good, because the AAW is a great organization, and the forums are a great source of discussion, and opinions on turning.

NEW AAW WEB SITE ROLL-OUT is happening soon.....

Check the AAW Home Page later tonight or tomorrow morning!! (If all goes well, you should see something new!!)

Thanks to all of the testers that provided feedback! Many good suggestions (and bug catches!) were sent-in. Certainly more site development will take place over time, but a lot of information from the current AAW site is being carried over to the new site; lots of things should seem familiar, but there will be many new pages, and an overall new "look".

Find and use the FAQ link on the home page to help you get oriented, and to answer basic questions you may have. Most parts of the new site will likely be intuitive, but there are some things that might take some getting used to to enter data for your own personal page, club/chapter pages, personal gallery images, etc. Take some time and look around, then start to develop your own personal profile, and related pages!!

Enjoy!

Rob

On my iPad, it's all text and no graphics. Definitely not an improvement over the previous version.

As of 10:09 am CST the new page is being put up (as I type this) - no idea how long it takes to move it to the woodturner.org domain server, but it is happening!

Rob

It is there (www.woodturner.org) now and looks great! Nice work. Renders perfectly on my Windows machine. Still needs some tweaking for iPad users, though, to avoid graphic/text overlap -- font sizes seem a bit too big.

Ken

It looks good; very clean. One thing; when I put up a photo gallery on my new Profile, if I click on the photo I get an overlap of upper banner menu items. If I click on 'Gallery' text below, I do not. I'm on a Mac laptop, not an IPad or phone. Minor hiccup.
Overall, it looks really nice. Question: can't we link to that public profile from the Forum profile? I'd expect them to be the same?

kudos to the webmaster, site is fully functional and looking good on a Windows machine
great job, and agree it is much less convoluted than previous layout

again, great job! 🙂

Same poor design...

I am so disappointed to learn that I still have to provide that darned second ID, password to work with the forum.
Somebody really missed the boat here.
Why is more than one ID necessary?

Viewing on my iPad

And it looks great. Loading of pages is fast, the new/added pages of content, like News, etc is a nice feature. Looking forward to playing around the website😉

....Why is more than one ID necessary?

Why? Because you don't have to be an AAW member to be a member of the forum. It would be strange indeed to set up two different registrations systems for the forum and having web design experience, it isn't hard for me to imagine what a database nightmare that would create. The forum is a separate site from woodturner.org and uses different software. I suppose that you know that you do not need to log in and out each time that you visit the forum unless you are on a public computer. When you first log in to the forum check the "Remember Me" check box and then never need to manually log in again. If for some reason you forget a password, that information is on your computer -- different browsers store that information in different locations.

Hi Richard!

Bill has it correct. The web site and the AAW forum are independent entities and are only linked for convenience to users. There ARE database issues; the open access that the Forum enjoys would not work with the AAW Web site, and our requirement to have a password-protected Members-Only area.

The two systems are that way by design and intent, not that someone missed the boat. It is necessary that we do our best to protect member's data, and still maintain an unrestricted access Forum.

I hope this explains why the system requires two different credentialing requests....

I think that logging in may temporarily be disabled while the full site is being brought online -- I checked a few minutes ago and logging in wasn't working.

I thought I had just forgot my username or password (again) and used the link to reset it, that worked. Then latter I got an email announcing the new website and instructions to login with new username and password. I think the username has changed from member number to your email address. If anyone is having trouble logging in check your email.

No Joy No email message

I am member number 13 and have been around since dirt was young. I can not get past the login. No matter what I enter for a user name-password combo. it won't recognize me ... an I have been using the same username password combo for a LONG time. I have yet to receive an email either.

frustrated!!!!!!🙁🙁🙁🙁

Just use this link to reset your password

They will send an email right away and it will set you up. It let me re-enter the same password that I had but now my username is my email address

Can't Sign In

Has the sign in process changed with the new look? I just tried but it would not let me in. Do we still use our member number as the user ID? Fortunately, I can still sign into the Forum.

I think that's the $64 question. It sure wouldn't hurt for them to post some information about it on the home page if that is the case.

It certainly wouldn't have have been too much trouble for the AAW to toss us a bone by putting a notice on the AAW home page that informs people that their old log-in will no longer work. The new log-in username will be your email address and you will need to create a new password that has at least eight characters -- at least one letter and at least one number. I went the route of contacting the AAW and they emailed me a temporary password and informed me that my username is now my email address. I am not sure exactly how it will work if you click on the "Forgot My Password" link, not to mention that it irks me to say that I forgot my password when I didn't. It's more like somebody else forgot to do something and then forgot to tell the rest of us. 🙄

Anyway, I hope this helps some of the other folks like me who haunt the forum and for the zillion or so AAW members who don't visit the forums, I hoped that they decide to put a notice on the home page.

Sorry, I should have read the e-mail from Phil McDonald yesterday. He told us about the new user name and how to reset the password.

Rob

Rob and Jane all the others who worked on this ... and to all who see it ...

I have been involved in a lot of website development over the years, having designed my first website back in the days when you had to teach yourself native html code ... about 100 years ago.

I have seen a fair share of good sites, too many sites that were just plain terrible and a few that, IMHO, were outstanding. AAW has hit this one out of the park, over the fence, and into the next county! In case you haven't figured it out, I really REALLY like this new site and new look.

As Rob has said, in his understated way, Try It You, Like It!

BIll, I'm sure you checked your spam folder. Good luck ----------------
I'll send you a pm

Al, I don't have a spam folder. Otherwise, I might miss out on a good deal for Viagra or miss an important message from my good buddy, the deposed Nigerian Crown Prince who I am helping transfer funds to a Swiss bank account. 🙄

The real problem, I suspect could be Time-Warner. They use a very heavy handed spam filter that prevents me from receiving a few things that I actually do want to receive such as communications with Canon USA. When I complain to them and ask for exceptions to allow certain email through they respond that they are satisfied with the way that things work and I should find alternate means of communicating. Well, the good news is "alternate means" is on its way as Comcast is taking over the broadband service in the DFW market area. 😀

------------------------------------------------

Dick, I think that I have a similar background to yours. My HTML editor used to be Notepad back in the mid 1990's. I didn't trust those early editors that generated cluttered up code that was too hard to debug.

------------------------------------------------

Anyway, for whatever reason, I never received an email message, but I did get things resolved yesterday afternoon. I contacted AAW HQ and Phil McDonald called back and left a message and provided a temporary password. I also sent them another message that it would be a good idea to put information on the home page on how to log on for anybody else who may not have received the email. I noticed that they did add a note this morning that links to the FAQ's for anybody having problems logging on.

So do I just go to the main forum page as I always do?

Yep!

I get the impression that they really really really really want members to sign in because there are two places on the home page to sign in -- the one on the right side of the page is fairly large -- like I said, I get the impression that they really do want me to sign in. Once you have created a new password and clicked the Remember Me box and signed in, it sort of remembers you, but you might need to give it a hint or two -- I suppose that the cookie is slightly senile.
