I know the editor position was open. Has the decision been made as to who will fill this position? Angelo mentions Carl in his Fall letter quite pointedly. Does this mean he has retained his position?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Carl has done a good job, certainly with bringing color to the journal. As a point of history/interest, Betty was editor of the journal before. She came along at the same time Mary Lacer did. AAW was in a bit of a mess, and they were very important in the recovery of the association.

Why the change in the editor position?

Carl is editor through the next Issue.

Carl has done a terrific job.

I know Betty will be an exceptional editor.

Al (and any other Board members reading this thread):

Will the AAW membership be informed of why the change in the editor position took place?

I can't imagine that it could be that Carl was not doing a good job at it. American Woodturner has developed superbly under his direction.

As in all businesses and administrative structures, pronouncements of major staff changes without explanation of why the change took place will ALWAYS raise questions from the constituency, and those directly effected by the change. It would be good for the Board to include some explanation with a public release of this kind of news or other information.

I had the pleasure of talking with Betty Scarpino for a while in the Instant Gallery in Richmond this summer and don't doubt that she'll do a great job.

It might be beneficial to maintain good Board-Membership relations to be as transparent as possible about such decisions.

rob My understanding is that it was simply a matter of the contract running out and had to be renewed so they had to look at other people as well as Carl.

I agree that it is clear that Carl was doing a fine job. Prior to retirement, I worked in the public sector where Boards (which met in public) were forbidden to discuss the reasons for personnel actions in a public forum (although the vote to authorize that action had to be taken in public). It was a matter of protecting the interests of both parties. Experience has shown that 'transparency' in this area of Board/Employee Relations is frequently very turbulent (for both). Although, "inquiring minds (may) want to know…," the practice of silence (in this kind of situation) on the part of both parties tends to maintain the dignity of both and avoid unnecessary litigation. I don't know if this is the policy of our board, but as one member of the organization, I applaud the practice and hope they maintain it.

If I remember correctly there was an announcement made either here or in the Journal about applications for an editor. This was several months ago. so I don't think anyone is trying to hide anything.

John,
I believe you are correct. This has always been my understanding of this position, and that a similar arrangement is also made with the Symposium Coordinators. The process is similar to applying for a job, and in Carl's case, being the incumbent, had to re-apply for his job if he so desired.
