Hello everyone. My name is Ken Vonk and I live in a small town in Arkansas. I started turning last October when my Dad brought me a Jet 1442 lathe. I haven't spent too much time turning but am enjoying it so far. I have made a couple dozen pens / pencils and three or four hollow forms. Unfortunately I live at least 1 1/2 hours from the nearest club. I just joined AAW a couple of weeks ago and was toying with the idea of starting a chapter here in Mena, Arkansas. I look forward to learning from all of you and trying new things. Almost everything is new....lol Should I post pictures here for critiques and suggestions? Or should I start a members gallery and post a link to the pictures there?

Thanks, Ken

Hi Ken - I started out on a Jet 1442. Lot you can do with that lathe. The biggest limiting factor I found with it was the relatively high low end speed. You'll need to have really balanced blanks when you start turning larger pieces. Other than that, it's a great lathe.

After a couple of months of use, tighten up the set screws on the pullys in the Reeves drive. They tend to loosen up after some use and you'll start to hear a clicking noise.

My opinion / experience is that if you really want a critique / discussion of a piece then post a picture in this forum and ask.

If you just want to show off a piece then post it in the gallery.

Welcome Ken. Looks like you have a good start. I agree with Ed if you want a critique post them here.

Welcome Ken! As a new AAW member you will receive a Resources Directory which will have a list of all members, including those in Arkansas. Might be some closer than you think, that you could meet.

Hi Ken,
If you'll check the chapter information on the AAW webpage, you might find that the SE Oklahoma chapter may be the closest to you. In the meantime, you are more than welcome to come up for a visit to our club in Rogers, AR. Just let me know if you plan to visit, and we'll provide the directions and the coffee and donuts.😀
