I have been reading many threads on this forum and decided to post and introduce myself. I'm Cyril Griesbach and live in Oshkosh, WI. Been and AAW member for about 2 years and belong to the North East WI Woodturners Club.

Got involved in turning a few years ago. Before I retired as a State Conservation Pilot and Game Warden, one deer season while working with my partner, he thought we should take a break before working late that night and go to his shop and turn a bowl. He set me up and guided me thorough what turned out to be a crude cherry bowl about 7" x 3.5". Well, I was hooked. Turning was something I had always wanted to try way back when I was young and I sure wish I had found some guidance in my earlier years. Still, better late than never, hey.

Anyway, I sure have enjoyed reading so much useful information here on this forum and want to thank all who have furthered my knowledge. I hope I can contribute to the discussions and will try to do so when I can.

Cyril

Thanks, Bill

Had a great dinner with my whole family at my mother's (one sister missing 'cause she lives on the other side of the country...the warmer side). Always have turkey day with her because...

MOM: What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
ME: Mom, it's deer season and I'm working.

Now reread this 20+ times. So...when I retired I promised her I'd spend thanksgiving with her. My wife is VERY understanding.

But pretty sore today. I'm building a new shop and put the finish coat on the drywall yesterday and sanded it this AM. Sore sholders, arms and neck but I'm sure anxious to get it done and get back to turning again.

Probably need to replace the filters in my respirator as well.

Holy smokes Cyril - you guys aren't that far from St.Paul. You may want to take a day trip to the AAW office and look at the gallery there. Some cool stuff.

The "reTURN to the Land of OZ" exhibit from the 2005 symposium is still there thru 12/15 as described here

Also there is a permanent display of donated works.

A little turning instruction goes a long way. Getting your technique tuned up can really make for faster and nicer turnings. It is an addicting hobby!

Thanks Ron and Jeff,

Saw the "Return to OZ" in KC this summer. Carol and I had a great time (first time at the symposium) and looking forward to going to KY this summer.

Can't wait to get the new shop finished so I can "return to turning". The next step will be to find help getting my machinery from the basement, garage and barn into the new shop. Hope some beer and brats will provide encouragement.

Jeff,

No we're not that far from St. Paul but it's still more than a day trip. Wanted to get there for the "Northern Reflections" exhibit where some of our club members had several entries. Carol also wanted to see the Mall of America but this time of the year is not in our wildest dreams. We're country folks...big city...shopping before Christmas...I don't think so...thanks. But we still want to get the the AAW HQ just to see it and the Gallery what ever is featured.
