Many of the threads recently have been from newly addicted turners looking for some pointers. I found that watching video is probably the one of the best way of learning, behind lessons and live demos where you can ask questions. I wandered across some free web based video that I thought had some value. I didn't recall anyone else noting its existence before so I thought that I would let the group know.

The video I found was on Woodcraft's site ... http://www.woodcraft.com/videos.aspx . A few tools are covered. It looks like the video was produced by Sorby to promote their tools.

The gouge and scraper demonstrations seem to be pretty decent technique. But I do take exception to a couple of things. First, the safety glasses are not adequate protection. Second the demonstrator takes a blank, drills a hole, puts it on a screw chuck and fires up the lathe at 1000 RPM, no tail stock support. That's a little risky in my book becuase of the speed and the uncertainty of the balance of any new blank.

Gary,
I requested one of their catalogs and they sent the cd's with it. There is a space at the bottom of the request form where you can write in additional information. You might request the cd's there to make sure you get them.

Those are actually quite nice sites for beginners... they probably are slightly biased, but they are nice! 😛 Kinda off the subject, but I was looking at the first site that was posted and going through and watching some of the videos. I got to the skewchigouge one... the resolution on it was horrible so I couldn't really see it, but what was driving me nuts was that I thought I have heard the sound track that they had playing in the background, but I couldn't remember what it is called! Anybody know... or am I the only one bored enough to notice this 😉 I am going to have a hard time going to sleep tonight 😀 😀
