I have a barracuda 2 chuck which has a very limited assortment of jaws and was wondering if any of the other manufacturers jaws would fit on it. I'm looking to use dovetail, long nose and possibly stepped jaws.
The barracuda works satisfactorily.
Also one normally doesn't know what they are missing until they try something better. Would that be the case if i bought a better chuck? Am I much better off upgrading my chuck or will the improvement be negligible?
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Robert,
I talked to a Penn State Ind. rep about other jaws that would fit there chucks, and his answer was none.
The only jaws that fit are their own.

Don't bother with the stepped jaws. Worthless as far as I am concerned. The problem with the steps is that the largest/tallest works best and the others not so much as they are down inside, and make getting to the bottom of things almost impossible.

The only interchangable jaws that I know of are the Vicmark to the Grizzly clone of the Vicmark small chuck. Vicmark is a top of the line chuck.

Eventually, you will find it easier to have a chuck for each set of jaws rather than a bunch of jaws and one chuck.

Robert,
Changing back and forth between jaws on a given chuck is not something you are going to want to do in the long term. If you possibly can, buy additional chucks and dedicate different types of jaws to each.

Oneway original and Talon have she same screw pattern as the Nova chucks. So Nova jaws and Oneway jaws (not Stronghold) work on both Nova chucks and the smaller Oneway chucks. Please note that the "safety" pin on the oneway jaws need to be removed for that jaw to sit properly.

You can get a variety of jaw slides for different manufactures to use with the Axminster versa chuck.

Amen to that!

I have a raft load of jaws and hardly ever feel inclined to change them -- instead, I tend to go with whatever jaws happen to be on the chuck if possible, which is almost always the #2 jaws whether for my Talon or Stronghold chucks. I also hate to remove an unfinished turning from the chuck to start another project. I know that this can get out of hand at some point when I see a shelf full of partially completed turnings all with a chuck attached. 😀

yeah, I have a set, dont use them much for the stated reasons above, waste of money.

I find that the Talon step jaws work well when the spigot jaws would be too long.
Although it may just be a (lack of ) technique issue, I find it easier to knock a piece out of alignment with spigot jaws than the step jaws when no tail stock is being used.
As always YMMV.
