Has anyone purchased the indexing wheel from the Iron Fire ad on the next to the last page (no page#) of the spring Journal?

I was going to order the M33 size but they don't have a method to order that particular one on their website though they do advertise it.

I telephoned the number that they provide and get a recording that "The subscriber is not accepting calls at this time".

Unusual way to do business.

Mike - They are located on the west coast and I would guess probably sell out of their house. If you called early from the east coast, they may have been sleeping (with the phone turned off).

I bought one of their indexing wheels (a year or so ago). Made of plastic, but works ok. Up to you to figure out a way to use it on your lathe. The PM3520b had some convenient tapped holes that I used to mount a pin holder to use the wheel.

I think it's a little pricey for what it is, but it's a lot cheaper than the alternatives and a lot less work than trying to drill one yourself. Now, if you had a machinist as a friend.........

If money is no object, Tony Cortese sells a really nice (all metal) indexing system. Probably run about $130, though. I would have to do a heck of a lot of indexing to justify that investment, but it looked really nice.

Mike:

You may want to have a look at the following web site/company for anodized aluminum indexing plates:

http://alisam.com/page/14g9e/Woodworking_turning.html

I bought a "universal" indexing plate from them, with a 1-1/4" hole for the Jet 1642 (the smaller version) - the plate is very well made. Clearly high quality craftsmanship. I bought the plate only from them and made my own indexing pin holder.

Check the configuration of holes in the plate to be sure it will work in your application.

I have considered buying the 'large' plate from them, but I don't do enough indexing on the lathe to warrant a second purchase right now - maybe in the future.

I can say the plate works well for me. No other affiliation with Alisam Engineering other than a happy customer (my original contact with them made through eBay).

I have the ironfirellc index wheel and it works perfectly and is easily worth the money. I don't believe they make one in 33mm.
I'll send you an e-mail tonight with Micheal Hare's number. VMwoodworking is his card but I don't think he has a website. He makes what I think is a better one out of thicker clear plexiglass and it uses 1/4" holes that are numbered. I don't know that he makes a 33mm but it would be worth a call to see if he can have one made.
You could probably take either one of the above and double stick tape them to a wooden faceplate and turn the center hole from 1 1/4 to 33mm. I would simply turn a 1 1/4" tenon on the faceplate to center the index wheel and then stick it on with double stick tape. Then turn away the middle and enlarge the hole.

They are "local" to me, in that it's a quick drive there. The wheel in question was designed by a member of the local club (infact last week the designer gave me some overlays that have odd/unusuall numbers indexed, like 53 spots)

I guessing the number in question is their cell-phone, and it's turned off (like mine is at work).

I have one of their wheels and have been happy with it

Mike - How about posting your thoughts after you get it and play with it a while? If I had know about the one you are getting when I was buying, I would have gone that way as well. Mabye I will in the future if I ever bend / break my current one.

Gee, Mike, wish I had known you wanted one. I have an extra Ironfire index wheel I'd have made you a good deal on.

Yeah, I know. I'd have posted it on the "Want-ads" forum but that's against the rules.

Want Ads

George,
I believe you have been mislead somewhere. There is no reason I know of why you can't sell the indexing wheel on the want ads.
