Steve Worcester has tendered his resignation as lead moderator for the AAW forums. Here’s a brief note from Steve:

For more than 7 years, I have played a role in helping to shape the AAW forums to the information library it is today. The last 6 or so weeks have been especially trying on us as we became the epicenter for the online activity and the frontline face of the AAW. While this is not completely my reason for retiring, it certainly became the tipping point.

Thanks Steve - you've been a real trooper and a valuable contributor to AAW's growth and success.

So, we need a replacement volunteer or two, otherwise, this forum will be closed. If you are interested in being a forum moderator, and are familiar with vBulletin software and html coding, please get in touch with me. This is an immediate need.

While we hate to see Steve go, maybe it is a hint of things to come....if we could clean up the darkness we might not lose the members that have given so much to give the rest of us so much. My hat is off to Steve, thank you for all you have done and of late, tried to do on behalf of all the turners out here. May you be well in your future. Once again, because of the actions of a few, we are losing an incredible asset. 🙂🙂

Unhappy Sad but understandable

Every one has a tipping point. Your other reasons are your own, you will be missed and I wish you well in any new endevor.

You have served the AAW and membership in general well indeed.

You will be missed!

Steve, thankyou for all of the hard work you have put into this forum over the years. You will definitely be missed by all of us here and will be hard to replace. Cannot blame you though after what you and Kurt have taken over the last 6 weeks. Good luck to you.

Sad to see you go

This forum is one of the best things about the AAW. And we owe that in great part to the moderators.

Thanks Steve for all your hard work. You will be missed.

Sincerely,
Frank

thanks for your time and attention, Steve. well done, the legend grows.

Steve will be sorely missed. I wish I had the skills and time to serve in his stead. Unfortunately, I have neither.

Steve, I offer my sincerest apologies for the part I played in making your role as moderator more difficult than it needed to be.

Thank you, Steve, for your dedication to ensuring the forums follow a focus and have a civil tone. Your job is on the front lines dealing with people's emotions.

Steve & Ed,
  • Can you both provide more insight into what the time requirements of the job entail?
  • What type of personality would likely be best suited for the job?
  • Does the job require the person to get along with the board? 😱

Thanks!

For a moderator, it has more to do with internet access through the day and checking emails. Most days, an hour, some days (last week) 5+/day.

Personality, would be someone who is a good listener (reader) because you have to read things monotone. You have to assume people didn't mean to be mean when they wrote it.

Getting along with the board - Technically, no, but to some extent, I guess, you work for (with) them. You only need to get along with the administrator and the other moderators. Ed Davidson is essentially the only one close to a board member (and he is not) that I talked to. But it is more communication between yourselves that is more important, so you would definitely have to like the other mods and admin and love talking woodturning. The last part is more important that you think. If you don't know how to turn, then being a mod on a board where you don't have input or some level of interaction and visibility, won't get you the attention of those you are moderating.
The board certainly knows who you are as this interface to them has over the years become more and more key to the next steps in an interaction medium. The unfortunate part is they don't use it enough, but I think that is changing.

Steve,
You have done a magnificent job for many years, volunteering huge amounts of your talent and personal time, maintaining the Forums and all the while continuing to volunteer to do additional tasks for the AAW as needed. I hold you in the highest esteem.
During the past 6 weeks, there have been those that have criticized you and challenged your motives. They should be ashamed.
I observed that of the many people that participated recently, very few had previously served on the board or on any of the many committees of the AAW. I received a quote recently that said “If you shoot the mules, you have to get down off the wagon and pull.†That time has come.
Thanks for all that you have done for the AAW.

Thanks a bunch for all the hours and dedication you gave too the role of Moderator Steve. Most take the role for granted and as we will soon see is an essential part of the forum, not to be taken lightly.

Wow, Steve. For many of us you are a picture, and a damn positive one at that, of the AAW that will be sorely missed.

Best wishes,

Ed, your address is no good.

I tried to email you about offering my services as a mod but got this:

I'm Sorry To See You Go!

Steve,
I know I was one of the thorns in your electronic side, and for that, I apologize.
You have served long and well. I appreciate your (over?) fairness in reacting to some of my posts.

Thank You For All You Did To Represent AAW and it's Membership.
Hopefully, you will continue to be a vital member of the AAW online community.

Thanks Steve for all the years of moderating.

It is nearly a thankless job. Even past the recent 6 week climate there were always challenges in dealing with newbies, and also ranters. I remember when I changed the forum from the old version to the new Vbulletin software, you were very helpful with me and with the online members to get the transition accomplished.

Then we started the online contests at one point and there was a flurry of discussions on how to best work that with the forum. It was always fun working with you, and I always appreciated the help and insight you brought in dealing with new items and with forum issues.

Thanks again for being the moderator for so long. 7 computer years are probably equivalent to 14 real-life years - in any event, a real long time.

Thanks

What everyone else said, and more. Gosh-what are you going to do with all your "spare" time??? Maybe more turning??????? Bets of luck and don't stay in the shadows, Gretch

Thanks Steve for all your hard work. I have only been a member a short time but certainly appreciate your work on a great forum.

Steve I haven't thanked you as of yet. I think you know I enjoy this forum and all the work you and the other guys put into it. A verrrrrry Biiigggg Thanks.

Steve,

Thank you for your time and services. I know that running things behind the scenes is a thankless job and really takes a special personal desire to remain focused and steadfast. I wish you the best, hope you are able to take advantage of your spare time, and enjoy turning as much as you can. Please continue to participate in the wood turning world. Those of us that are relative newbies respect and look up to you more seasoned turners.

In other news, and I know you said this wasn't the sole reason for moving on, but those who have made your life and efforts more difficult that it should have been, should be ashamed. There is no excuse.

Happy turning.
