I have been working on my “Woodturning Gizmos and Gadgets†talk for the Special Interest Night (SIN) activity scheduled for Friday evening (June 28th) at the AAW Symposium. I was asked to give this presentation again at the Tampa Symposium; I have previously presented it at the past two AAW Symposia, and it has been a well-attended and popular SIN activity.
This talk highlights the creativity of woodturners who have produced all kinds of jigs, specialized tools, enhancements to their turning station and lathe, and related themes. This SIN session is meant to be a specialized “Show and Tell†session for the exchange of ideas on how woodturners have solved problems through creative “tinkering†and development of practical solutions to common woodturning problems.
As I prepare for making the presentation (Powerpoint), I see that I could easily add a few more images and explanations of more “gizmos†if you are willing to contribute them to the session. I am also looking for images of woodturning tool storage solutions you may have developed – wall racks, carousel-style tool holders, tool carts, specialized cabinetry, etc. You will be recognized by name for your contribution to the SIN presentation and as originator of the idea.
Even if you can’t attend the AAW Symposium, you can participate in this SIN activity by submitting images and descriptions of your gizmo to me in advance as long as you are willing to have your item shown to the SIN group with Powerpoint images and explained with the description you provide. This would contribute to the goal of sharing practical woodturning information and ideas. My hope is that participants would come away from this SIN session with lots of ideas they can take home and try themselves, and tell others about them at their Chapter meetings or in their newsletters.
If you have a neat solution or great idea, have repurposed some item to aid in your woodturning techniques, modified an existing tool or device to improve how you turn, or have developed a gizmo that makes your woodturning more efficient, of higher quality, or can be done more safely, these are exactly the kinds of ideas and images I would like to include in the discussion!!
SUBMITTING IMAGES AND BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS:
If you would like to have your gizmo/storage solution/idea presented, please submit descriptions and images as follows:
1. Send the description information in the body of an e-mail message and up to 4 images per item as attachments (i.e. NOT as embedded images) to me at:
rwallace@iastate.edu
Each contribution will be acknowledged by return e-mail to let you know I have received and can work with your image(s).
2. Be sure to include your name, city & state, e-mail address, and a description of the item, including what it is used for, what it is made from, special techniques needed, etc. Please also let me know if you are willing to have people contact you at your e-mail address for more information on your ‘gizmo’ or ‘gadget’.
3. IMAGES should be sent as jpegs only. Please keep the size of each image between 50K to 500K, if possible, so we don’t get too many ‘large file rejections’ by my University’s mail server (….we won’t need very high resolution images for Powerpoint anyway…!).
I’ll be finalizing the presentation by Monday (June 24th), so any submissions would need to be received by then. Thank-you in advance for your contribution to the AAW SIN ‘Gizmos and Gadgets’ session!!
