I made a mortar and pestle for LOML's nephew for his use in his kitchen grinding up spices and such. I would like to be able to tell him how to properly clean it.

The unit is made out of Maple and is finished with Mahoney's Walnut Oil, which was suggested in one of these forums.

I was await for all the knowlegeable wisdom from the members of this forum.

Thanks, Tim.

Cleaning Kitchenware

The easiest thing to do is simply wash with soapy water, rinse and dry. I do not recommend using the dishwasher. Once in awhile, re-apply some of the Mahoney walnut oil. Simple!:)

I'll second Kurt's recommendation, and pass along a compliment on the mortar and pestle. That's some real pretty maple.

Nice work on a good looking piece of wood!!!

Salt rub often is enough to get the loose pieces of herbs out of the bottom, and salt and vinegar if that does not do it.

Pestos (herbs and oils and nuts) are where wipe, saltrub, wipe works well for us for both the mortar and pestle.

Loudly -- "Not the dishwasher unless you want to destroy the piece".

I second all except the use of soap. Excellent chance it will be absorbed into the wood. I typically use very hot water, and wipe with a paper towel.
Very nice job with the mortar and pestle Tim!
