How much for your Wand?

I know there is the usual charge of 2-3 x your cost of material when setting a price for our turnings, but what about Harry Potter type wands? I have seen some on line for over $100! These are for kids. Even the cost of "exotics" like purple heart or pink ivory isn't that much for a 3/4 x 12 inch wand. Is $15 enough? Is $30 too much? How much have you been able to get for your wands?

I haven't done any wands but I never use the formula for a turning of 2-3x the materials - for example my wine stoppers- the cork ones - total cost of materials for say a cocobolo one is about $1.50 - time to turn it if Im in production mode - lets say 5 minutes at the top - they usually sell for $15 each (these are the cork ones) if I used the formula I would sell them for $3 to $4.50 - not worth it imho. So if I would say on a wand - without seeing them - $30 isnt too much - it really is what will the market bear and how nice your wands are compared to others. It is also my expereince that the type of wood has no reference to a buyer in an item like this. It's all - does it look the way they like. So don't expect them to pay more for a purpleheart or pink ivory than they would for maple for the most part.

So price to your market is my suggestion

I've only done one Harry Potter magic wand, and it was for someone at work. He requested it, and it was intended as a gift for his son.

Although he expected to pay for my services, I declined payment. I have no intention of making any more wands, so my satisfaction was knowing I contributed to the dreams of some young man.

It was made from a piece of scrap wood I had on hand, so there was no investment, other than about a half hour of my time. If I were to do it for profit, I'd think about $20, plus cost of materials ought to cover it.

Now, in the unlikely event that I had buyers for a thousand magic wands, I think I could make them for only a few bucks apiece......plus materials cost! 😀

My Eccentric Ones

With a 1/2" by 2" deep box (cap removes) to store magic dust sell for $45-55
HERE are some pictures of one about 15" long. But they are a labor of love. i won't get rich! Over an hour to make one depending on how many eccentric elements there are.

That is a fabulous looking wand, Jerry.........

Out of curiosity, I ran a search for "magic wand" on ebay. I came up with the following person, who specializes in making magic wands. This really did surprise me, because I'd have bet there was no market for such a thing......guess I was wrong, as I see a bid on one of his wands right now!

Prices seem to all be around $20 +/-

I guarantee mine to work,

sell mostly for adults as you say; offer money-back guarantee, no refunds yet. Every person has magic powers, if they quietly pay attention. The wand is the catalyst. So I say, and believe. Gave one to each of my 10 grand nieces and nephews. One niece idly sat on hers, busting it like a twig. Much sadness until my brother glued it back up, then the magic returned.
